Live commerce, a fusion of e-commerce and live streaming, is gaining traction in the US. This phenomenon allows consumers to purchase products in real-time while interacting with the host, creating a unique and engaging shopping experience. The growth of live commerce in the US can be attributed to the increasing popularity of social media platforms, advancements in technology, and the desire for immersive online experiences. Key players in the live commerce space include ShopShops, NTWRK, and Whatnot, which have raised significant funding to expand their operations. ShopShops, for example, has partnered with Macy's and Nordstrom to offer live shopping experiences. Industry observers expect the US live commerce market to grow significantly, with major brands investing heavily in this space. To put this growth into perspective, the U.S. e-commerce market grew 32% in 2020 to reach $790 billion, up from $598 billion the year before. This represents a substantial increase, with the market expected to grow roughly 25 times its original size in five years. Live commerce is not unique to the US; it has also gained popularity in countries like China, where platforms like Taobao and JD.com have been using live streaming to sell products for years. The success of live commerce in these markets has encouraged US-based companies to explore this format, leading to increased investment and innovation in the space. Operator anecdote: Whatnot's success story. Whatnot, a live commerce platform, has been making waves in the industry with its impressive valuation. But what's behind this success story? To understand Whatnot's journey, let's take a step back and look at its humble beginnings. Founded in 2019, Whatnot started as a small team with a big vision: to create a platform that would revolutionize the way people shop online. With a focus on live streaming and real-time interaction, Whatnot aimed to bring the excitement of in-person shopping to the digital world. One of the key factors that contributed to Whatnot's success was its ability to identify and capitalize on the growing trend of live commerce. By partnering with popular social media influencers and content creators, Whatnot was able to tap into existing audiences and create engaging shopping experiences that felt authentic and interactive. This strategy paid off, with Whatnot seeing a significant increase in user engagement and sales. Another important aspect of Whatnot's success was its commitment to building a strong community around its platform. By fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging user interaction, Whatnot created a loyal following of customers who felt invested in the platform's success. This community-driven approach helped to drive word-of-mouth marketing and attracted new users to the platform. Whatnot's success can also be attributed to its innovative approach to e-commerce. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Whatnot was able to streamline its operations and improve the overall user experience. This allowed the company to focus on what mattered most: creating a unique and engaging shopping experience that would keep customers coming back for more. In conclusion, Whatnot's success story serves as a testament to the power of live commerce and the importance of creating engaging and interactive experiences for customers. As the live commerce market continues to grow, it will be exciting to see how other brands adapt to this new format and create innovative experiences for their customers. Macy's small-format Cherry Hill Route 70 store expected to close. Timing unclear.

Macy's small-format Cherry Hill Route 70 store expected to close. Timing unclear. The Macy's small-format store on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, which opened in 2024, is expected to close based on updated marketing documents from the shopping center's property owner combined with new retailer announcements. To be very clear, the Cherry Hill Mall Macy's is remaining open. They are unaffected by this news. For the Route 70 small-format Macy's store, an October 15 update of the property owner's online marketing documents, identified the exact location of a recently announced Wayfair store within its Garden State Park Marketplace shopping center (which also home to Wegmans, Best Buy, Home Depot and more). The updated online leasing plan places Wayfair across two connected storefronts: the former Christmas Tree Shops and the Macy's immediately to its left. While the property owner's document indicates Macy's space will taken over by upcoming tenant Wayfair, a closing date for the Route 70 Macy's has not been announced. An interesting aspect of this is on the opposite (right) side of the former Christmas Tree Shops is Dick's Sporting Goods. That store has already announced it is closing ahead of its relocation to the new Dick's House of Sport at Cherry Hill Mall. With Christmas Tree Shops already empty and Dick's preparing to leave, those two spaces might seem like the obvious combination for Wayfair. But the square footage tells a different story. When I first worked on the Wayfair announcement with fellow local blogger Neil from the popular Facebook page "A View From Evesham", 42Freeway both did the simple math a few weeks ago using the announced store size and immediately had the same reaction: "Wow, Macy's is going to close." To explain, the former Christmas Tree Shops is listed at 50,000 square feet. The adjacent Dick's Sporting Goods space is also listed at 50,000 square feet. Combining those two would create a 100,000-square-foot store. But Wayfair's official corporate announcement says its upcoming Cherry Hill location will be 86,000 square feet. So it wouldn't "add up" that the soon to close Dick's Route 70 store was part of the Wayfair project. But guess what, guys? The Macy's unit is listed at 36,000 square feet. So if you add that to the 50,000-square-foot Christmas Tree Shops, you get exactly the 86,000 square feet Wayfair announced! So while I trust Edgewood Properties to accurately identify tenants on its own leasing documents, the square footage provides another clear piece of support for the layout shown in the updated plan. There is another interesting detail in the property's marketing materials: the shopping center is identified as fully leased. That makes me wonder whether Dick's still has an active lease it will continue paying after the Route 70 store closes. That is my interpretation of the leasing information; the document does not establish the remaining terms of Dick's lease. As for Macy's, I would imagine the store could remain open through the holiday shopping season, but that is speculation. A closing timetable remains unannounced. Shoppers also still have the much larger, full-size Macy's nearby at Cherry Hill Mall. Closing a store only about two years after opening would certainly be a short run. But in some quick research, I also found reports that Macy's recently announced the closing of its small-format Ramsey, New Jersey, location after approximately one year. For Cherry Hill, the updated property-owner plan points to Wayfair taking over the Macy's space alongside the former Christmas Tree Shops. Links and location.
