Overview
MaineHousing finances and supports affordable housing in Maine by raising private capital through tax-exempt mortgage revenue bonds. Proceeds fund home loans, down payment and closing-cost assistance, rental subsidies (Section 8), and the development and rehabilitation of affordable rental housing, along with LIHTC and rural housing programs. It is self-funded and does not use state general funds; mortgage income repays investors and covers operating costs. Its goal is to increase safe, affordable housing for Maine residents and support the state’s housing market, aiding over 90,000 households annually.
