Mammoet delivers oversized transformer with AL600 girder frame trailer. Rate this post Mammoet transported an oversized transformer from Hitachi Energy's factory in Ludvika to Köping Port using its high-capacity AL600 girder frame trailer after the unit exceeded Sweden's rail transport weight limits. Working with Maersk Project Logistics and Hitachi Energy, Mammoet developed a road transport solution for the heavy transformer, which was destined for shipment to China. The AL600 girder frame trailer was selected because it distributes loads over a greater distance while keeping cargo positioned low to the ground, reducing road impact and allowing the transport to pass beneath overhead obstacles with minimal route modifications. To meet Hitachi Energy's lashing requirements, Mammoet engineers designed and fabricated a bespoke adapter for the girder frame, while Hitachi modified the transformer interface to ensure seamless integration. Maersk Project Logistics managed the overall project, including ocean transport, route planning and road preparations, with Mammoet providing engineering support for permitting. Limited space at the manufacturing facility required the girder frame to be manoeuvred into position using two 14-line self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) combinations before the transformer was lifted into the frame by a 500-tonne crane. Once outside the factory, the SPMTs were replaced with two 19-line conventional trailer combinations powered by two prime movers and a hydraulic drive system. Stretching almost 100 metres in length and weighing more than 800 tonnes, the transport travelled 130 kilometres from Ludvika to Köping Port over two nights. One of the most challenging sections came immediately outside the factory, where a temporary crossing had to be installed over two railway lines within a strict three-hour window to avoid disrupting rail traffic. "This was one of the biggest challenges when it came to the schedule," said William Soeters, Project Manager at Mammoet. "We had just three hours to prepare the crossing, move the convoy across and remove everything before train services resumed." At Köping Port, the transformer was loaded onto a RoRo vessel for transfer to Norrköping before being placed in a laydown area to await collection by a heavy-lift vessel bound for China. The project demonstrates how specialist transport engineering and tailored equipment can overcome the increasing logistical challenges associated with transporting next-generation power infrastructure.

Mammoet unveils new Monopile solutions. Rate this post Mammoet has successfully deployed two new heavy lifting innovations during the Baltic Power offshore wind project, improving the safety and efficiency of handling next-generation XXL monopile foundations. The new technologies were used to support Van Oord during the marshalling of 78 monopiles at the Port of Rønne, Denmark, before installation at the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, located 23 kilometres off the Polish coast. Once operational, the project is expected to generate around 4 TWh of renewable electricity annually, covering approximately three percent of Poland's electricity demand. The monopiles, measuring up to 86.3 metres in length, 9.1 metres in diameter and weighing as much as 1,680 tonnes, were transported using Mammoet's XXL Monopile Transport System. First introduced in 2024, the system enables the safe handling, storage and transport of increasingly larger offshore wind foundations while reducing civil works through its innovative foldable saddle design. For quayside lifting operations, Mammoet also deployed its new MTC 1600 terminal crane for the first time. Working in tandem, two cranes with a combined lifting capacity of 3,200 tonnes transferred the monopiles from the quay directly into the water for loading onto Van Oord's installation vessel Svanen. During the project, Mammoet also introduced process improvements by using the MTC 1600 cranes to unload monopiles directly from barges, reducing handling time and significantly improving operational efficiency. "When we were in discussions with Van Oord, it wanted to upgrade the Svanen to have a 3,000-tonne lifting capacity so the vessel could install XXL monopiles in the Baltics," said Jaap van der Riet, Commercial Manager at Mammoet. "To further support that, we said we would develop cranes and systems that matched this capacity. This is a real strength of Mammoet. If no solutions exist, we develop them together with our clients to meet their specific needs." The project follows Mammoet's earlier work upgrading Svanen with a new A-frame, reinforcing its role in supporting the next generation of offshore wind installations.
Mammoet performs FPU weighing, jacking for Woodside's Scarborough project. Mammoet worked with QMW to develop a solution for moving and installing the FPU topsides module. Mammoet has completed the weighing, jacking and load-out of a 33,000t floating production unit (FPU) for Woodside Energy's Scarborough project at the Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW) fabrication yard in China. The operation utilised Mammoet's Mega Jack 10000 system, marking its first use on a project of this scale. Mammoet worked with QMW and project engineers from the early phases, beginning eight years prior, to develop a solution for moving and installing the FPU topsides module and its deck support frame. Project teams determined that integrating weighing and jacking processes would reduce overall timelines. The Mega Jack 10000 system, using four towers strategically placed under the load's strongest points, lifted and weighed the topsides simultaneously. Eighty load cells, each capable of measuring up to 750t, were incorporated into the system for accurate weight determination and even load distribution. Engineers manufactured a bespoke load-spreading beam, which was fabricated and attached to the base of the topsides, allowing jacking operations from four points and also supporting construction activities. Once the system established the final weight of the topsides, the Mega Jack towers elevated the structure to 16m, permitting insertion and connection of the deck support frame (DSF) beneath. After weight transfer from the towers to the DSF, crews shifted the topsides onto the installation barge in measured increments, utilising eight strand jacks. Mammoet managed barge ballasting to maintain stability during this transition and loading phase. The engineering solution involved constructing the topsides near ground level, reducing the amount of lifting equipment required and minimising the reinforced surface area needed for operations. The integrated beam replaced the need for additional steel in the form of conventional load-spreading beams, streamlining materials and equipment use. This approach facilitated parallel construction activities and removed the need to wait for the support frame to complete before fabricating the topsides, avoiding work at height and promoting operational efficiency. Previous planning discussions, dating back to the initial design stages, allowed for project efficiencies by enabling integrated lifting operations and closer ground-level work. Mammoet's involvement in the design process ensured the load-out process proceeded according to the planned schedule and specifications for the Scarborough development.
