Overview

Marvel Fusion develops laser-driven fusion energy using non-thermal direct-drive inertial confinement with nanostructured fuel targets. It aims to trigger fusion reactions with low-neutronic fuels like hydrogen-boron, reducing long-lived radioactive waste. The company builds a new high-powered laser facility in collaboration with Colorado State University, housing multiple multi-petawatt lasers to conduct experiments and advance fusion research. Its approach differs from many competitors by applying direct-drive laser for fusion with nanostructured fuels and a focus on hydrogen-boron to minimize waste, supported by a strong academic and private funding network. The goal is to enable a safe, clean, and reliable fusion power plant that helps the world move toward sustainable energy.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Secured €385M total funding, best-funded European fusion company by March 2025.
  • ATLAS facility completes end-2026 with DOE grant for validation experiments.
  • Partners with Siemens Energy for 100MW pilot plant by 2033.

What critics are saying

  • CSU budget shortfalls halt $150M ATLAS by mid-2026.
  • €385M burn rate forces 2026 down-round without net energy gain.
  • HB11 Energy captures APAC contracts before CSU completion.

What makes Marvel Fusion unique

  • Marvel Fusion uses nanostructured hydrogen-boron targets for low-neutronic fusion.
  • Employs multi-petawatt lasers firing ten pulses per second at ATLAS facility.
  • Led by experts Georg Korn, Hartmut Ruhl, and Gérard Mourou.
