Molecule

Molecule

Decentralized biotech marketplace funding IP-NFTs

Overview

Molecule runs a decentralized biotech marketplace that connects scientists and researchers with investors to fund and advance novel research and intellectual property. Its platform tokenizes IP into IP-NFTs and enables the creation of Bio-DAOs, letting researchers raise funds and investors gain fractional ownership in early-stage biotech assets. The process works by packaging research projects as IP-NFTs and organizing collaborative governance through Bio-DAOs, with trades and funding occurring on a decentralized platform that charges transaction or onboarding fees. Molecule differentiates itself by embracing the DeSci trend, using tokenization and fractional ownership to streamline asset transfer, fundraising, and collaboration across the life sciences, rather than relying on traditional venture-backed rounds. The goal is to accelerate innovation in drug development and other scientific research by providing new funding avenues and a more open, efficient market for research assets.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • bio.xyz offers $100,000 USDC grants, attracting early biotech founders and research communities.
  • March 2026 SEC engagement improved credibility for Molecule's compliant path from tokens to equity.
  • Molecule claims eight BioDAOs raised $30.3 million, proving repeatable fundraising demand.

What critics are saying

  • BIO Protocol spinout fragments attention and value capture across Molecule, BIO, and DAO stakeholders.
  • DeSci adoption remains niche; bio.xyz still depends on cohort-funded DAOs and speculative tokens.
  • If regulators reject tokenized-IP fundraising, Molecule's marketplace becomes a compliance-heavy dead end.

What makes Molecule unique

  • Molecule built IP-NFTs, turning biomedical patents into onchain, tradable assets since 2018.
  • bio.xyz launched February 2026, pairing Molecule infrastructure with biotech DAO launch support.
  • March 2, 2026 SEC meeting signaled a compliance moat for token-to-equity workflows.

How Molecule Is Accelerating Medical Research Through Tokenised Ip And Decentralised Biotech Funding

Academic research is challenging. Obtaining grants and financial support for research projects is highly competitive and time-consuming. Researchers typically juggle multiple projects, including teaching, and they also have to deal with realities like data management and ethics. But now, a movement called Decentralised Science (DeSci) aims to transform traditional scientific research by connecting patients, scientists, investors, biotech DAOs, and novel crowdfunding methods. It democratises access to research funding through greater transparency, open access, and collaborative efforts, thus accelerating scientific breakthroughs.DeSci leverages blockchain-based platforms, tools, NFTs, tokens, decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs), and Web3 principles to facilitate funding for scientific research. From online communities to open source bioscienceI spoke to a pioneer of the DeSci movement, Paul Kohlhaas, founder and Chief Architect at Molecule, a platform dedicated to accelerating scientific research and bringing intellectual property onchain through community-driven initiatives. It's like crowdfunding on steroids, where instead of getting an item in exchange for your funding, you get a cut of the intellectual property (IP).Kohlhaas spent his youth engaging with online biohacking forums and patient communities on platforms like Reddit, where online communities focused on tackling medical challenges—like diabetic patients collaborating to develop their own insulin due to its prohibitive cost in the US. From HIV communities exploring gene therapies to cancer patient groups sharing experimental treatments, nootropics and longevity, there was a community for virtually everything. He recalls:"What struck me was the collaborative and open spirit of these groups

Molecule Lands a $13 Million Seed Funding Round for Decentralised Science Platform - The Daily Encrypt

Northpond Ventures led the round that saw Molecule raise $13 million in seed capital. Backed VC and Shine Capital were also part of the round, as was Speedinvest, Speedinvest, and Balaji Srinivasan, former Coinbase CTO. This protocol views itself as part decentralized science, which is a movement that allows research projects to be owned and funded collectively.
