Freight Caviar
Oct 14th, 2026
Shut down, reopen, repeat.

Shut down, reopen, repeat. After chameleon carriers and chameleon ELDs, FMCSA is now telling FreightCaviar there are chameleon CDL schools too. Happy Hump Day. Welcome to FreightCaviar's 2026 field guide to chameleons, and no, FreightCaviar is not talking about the lizard. Plus: * Load Posts Fall, but Rates Keep Climbing * Brokers Debate a $10M-Per-Head AI Future * Carriers Smuggled Cocaine and Never Knew It FMCSA has removed nearly ______ training providers from its registry since December. What's cookin' in freight. Load Posts Fall, but Rates Keep Climbing. DAT One load posts fell 18% last week, with van down 20.4%, reefer 20.7%, and flatbed 12.5%, as the quarter-end freight surge cleared. Rates didn't follow. Van linehaul rose 5 cents to $2.26 a mile, reefer rose 6 cents to $2.75, and flatbed rose 1 cent to $2.65. Load-to-truck ratios are running well above last year: 10.5 for van vs. 6.3 a year ago, 16.8 for reefer vs. 10.7, and 36.6 for flatbed vs. 27.2. Overall, linehaul rates are about a third higher than last year. A cooling diesel surcharge mostly pulled the all-in flatbed rate lower, not the demand. Brokers Debate a $10M-Per-Head AI Future. Brokers are split on whether AI will push brokerages to $5 million to $10 million in revenue per employee within 5 to 10 years, up from today's $1 million to $1.5 million. Scott Nelson, Chief Customer Officer at Cincinnati's Motus Freight, posted that the company is on pace to reach $230 million this year across 85 employees, about $2.7 million per head. Not everyone buys the automation math. One pushed back: "Five million in revenue per employee works until the software hits a missing POD, a bad appointment number, and a driver calling from the gate. One person still gets all three at 4:45." Carriers Smuggled Cocaine and Never Knew It. More than 20 people were arrested this week in a racketeering and drug trafficking case built on over-the-road carriers who had no idea they were being used. Florida's attorney general says the ring moved cocaine from California into Florida inside legitimate freight shipments, with the alleged supplier receiving 50 to 60 kilograms every 15 days. Agents intercepted one load as suspects broke down a pallet holding more than 40 kilograms of cocaine. Charges span racketeering conspiracy and trafficking in cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine across three Florida counties. None of the carriers involved have been named as defendants. Presented by vooma. Teams have seen an increase of 0.5-1% in GP, Quote win rates up by 15%, carrier re-use doubling, and reps focusing their time on relationships and more strategic work.
