nEye

Programmable optical switches for data centers

Overview

nEye Systems designs programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that implement high-radix optical circuit switching on a silicon chip. Their main product is a programmable optical switch built on silicon photonics, enabling high-capacity, low-power data paths for AI, ML, and other data-intensive workloads. The system uses a PIC-based switch fabric that can be configured to route optical signals through many channels, reducing electrical power needs and easing network scaling in data centers. Compared with competitors, nEye focuses on integrating high-radix, programmable optical switching directly on silicon wafers to deliver scalable, energy-efficient networking for AI infrastructure, leveraging MEMS photonics and silicon photonics techniques. The company aims to make data center networks more power-efficient and scalable to meet rising demands from AI and ML workloads.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Production samples of SuperSwitch expected in 2026 enabling rapid deployment for AI gigawatt factories
  • $80M Series C accelerates high-volume manufacturing before the $3B optical circuit switching market peaks
  • Joining Open OCS project with Google, NVIDIA, and Microsoft grants access to critical open optical standards in 2025

What critics are saying

  • NVIDIA and Intel scaling own silicon photonics stacks compresses nEye's hyperscaler window by 45–60% in 9–15 months
  • Hyperscaler mandates wafer-scale OCS integration into custom ASICs by 2027, forcing nEye into <5% revenue niche role
  • TSMC and GlobalFoundries partner exclusively with Celero and Lightmatter, blocking nEye's access to 300mm photonics capacity in 6–12 months

What makes nEye unique

  • nEye's OCS-on-a-chip cuts power by 1,000x and footprint by 100x versus traditional switches
  • Integrates silicon photonics, MEMS, and CMOS into a single chip for flexible CPU/GPU resource pooling
  • Backed by CapitalG, M12, NVIDIA, and Sutter Hill Ventures with $152M total funding for hyperscaler use-cases
