Overview

North Slope Borough School District runs public schools for children across northern Alaska, with instruction shaped by the needs and traditions of predominantly Inupiat communities. Its academic mission links reading, writing and mathematics with students' understanding of Inupiat values, history, language and culture. The Inupiaq Learning Framework guides curriculum and assessment, while the district's Inupiaq Language Program teaches language through an accelerated second-language method and a custom computer-based learning tool. Teachers receive culturally based teaching units, resources and professional development. The district is guided by its Board of Education and was founded in 1973; its central office is in Utqiagvik, Alaska.
