Northrop Grumman, in partnership with the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) at the University of Western Australia, has conducted a successful demonstration of a bi-directional space-to-ground laser communication (lasercom) link in Western Australia. "This demonstration is a powerful example of how Australian technology providers and Northop Grumman are working together to accelerate next-generation optical communications. This demonstration is partnership at its best, focused, practical and delivering results that matter," Northrop Grumman Australia, Country Executive, Rob Denney, said. TeraNet-2, located at a tracking facility in WA, is operated by the University of Western Australia (UWA) under the leadership of Sascha Schediwy. "This testing demonstrates Northrop Grumman is at the leading edge of laser communications for defence and commercial space missions. Our partnership with UWA and industry leaders exemplifies the collaborative ecosystem that drives breakthrough capabilities for our customers," Growth & Business Development Director for the Intelligence & Sensing business unit, Will Whalen, and Deputy Kyle Zeisig, said. During the demonstration, Northrop Grumman Program Manager Jonathan Baggett and Technical Lead Sid Ghosh worked on site with UWA, overseeing integration of NG hardware, alignment and real-time troubleshooting to ensure mission success. "Being on the ground allowed us to fine-tune every aspect of the link in real time," explained. "The team's dedication and collaboration were pivotal to achieving this milestone," Baggett said. Using the TeraNet-2 optical ground terminal built by the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), the testing validated a suite of advanced optical communications technologies demonstrating satellite tracking and bidirectional data transfer. "The SDA waveform adapts dynamically to atmospheric conditions, unlocking reliable gigabit-per-second downlinks. This success paves the way for next-generation sensor data streaming, secure communications and rapid decision making in contested environments," Ghosh said. Free space laser communications use tightly focused optical beams instead of traditional radio frequencies to move data between space and the ground. For satellite operators and mission owners, according to Northrop Grumman, that enables much higher data rates to move massive volumes of sensor data, imagery and situational awareness products; reduced spectrum congestion since optical links do not rely on scarce RF spectrum; inherently narrow, harder-to-intercept beams, improving resilience and security for sensitive missions; and smaller, lighter terminals on orbit and on the ground compared with some legacy RF systems. These attributes are increasingly important as government and commercial operators field proliferated constellations and data-intensive payloads. Northrop Grummans IVEWS completes 500 flight hours on F-16. Northrop Grumman's Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS) has accumulated more than 500 flight hours across more than 300 sorties during testing on the F-16. The electronic warfare system is designed to detect, identify, and counter radio-frequency (RF) threats from land, surface, and airborne sources. Its testing has included scenarios involving multiple simultaneous threats. IVEWS is being developed as an electronic warfare upgrade for the F-16 and is designed to work with the aircraft's AN/APG-83 SABR active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. The system uses pulse-to-pulse interoperability with the radar to allow electronic warfare and radar functions to operate together. The integration is intended to maintain radar and electronic warfare functionality while the aircraft operates in environments with multiple RF threats. Northrop Grumman is also developing IVEWS around an open architecture to allow future electronic warfare capabilities to be integrated as threat requirements change. The approach is intended to reduce the time and aircraft modifications required when introducing new capabilities. The US Air Force has selected IVEWS as its F-16 electronic warfare program of record. The system is intended to provide the fleet with an updated EW capability as operators continue to upgrade and extend the service lives of existing F-16 aircraft. Static and predictable RF threats are increasingly being supplemented by systems that can operate across wider portions of the electromagnetic spectrum and change their operating modes rapidly. Electronic warfare systems therefore require the ability to identify and respond to changing RF environments while an aircraft is operating. "You cannot defeat what you cannot see," said Shalini Gupta, vice president of electronic warfare and targeting at Northrop Grumman. "A modern EW suite is essential for operations in contested airspace. We are producing fully functional, flight-proven systems now. From day one, our customers gain the ability to geolocate threats with a single aircraft, and the confidence that comes with having a U.S. program of record system on board." The accumulated flight hours and sorties form part of the ongoing development and validation of IVEWS, including its ability to detect and respond to RF threats and operate alongside the F-16's existing mission systems.

Viewers will see the Falcons donning the special 2026 edition of the Air Power Legacy Series uniform for the Navy game on Oct. 3 at the Air Force Academy's stadium, according to a Tuesday release. The special uniform showcases details symbolizing the stealth bomber throughout its design, from its backplate and patches to its red towel. The uniform has depictions of the stealth bomber in silver, and "B-21" can be seen printed on the helmet. Images and a video showing the uniform display phrases like "power projection" and "strategic deterrence" in place of a player's last name on the uniform's backplates. Patches on the player's shoulder either represent the Air Force Global Strike Command, 412th Test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base that manages the B-21 development, or the Air Force Materiel Command. The red towel tucked into the player's side says "remove before flight," an homage to the red ribbon safety warning usually seen while aircraft are on the ground to be removed before flight.
