Nothing

Design-focused consumer electronics manufacturer and brand

Overview

Nothing Technology Limited designs and sells consumer electronics such as smartphones, wireless earbuds, audio devices, and smartwatches through direct-to-consumer channels and retail partners. Its devices run Nothing OS, a customized Android-based software, and use a distinctive design language that can include transparent hardware and features like the Glyph Interface on phones. The company differentiates itself with a design-led aesthetic, a community-funded investment model, and a sub-brand for affordable products (CMF by Nothing) created to reach more price-sensitive customers. Its goal is to become a design-focused challenger in consumer tech by expanding its ecosystem of devices and software under Nothing OS and growing both sales and brand adoption.

Nothing raises $456M to challenge Apple iPhone dominance

Nothing, a London-based consumer tech startup founded in 2020, has raised $456 million in venture funding and achieved a $1.3 billion valuation. The company manufactures smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds designed to compete with Apple and Samsung at lower price points. Nothing's 4a Pro phone retails for $599, undercutting the comparable iPhone 17 at $799. The company reached $1 billion in lifetime sales in 2024 and has gained significant traction on social media, with Google searches for its products up 500% over five years. The startup's success comes as venture capital funding for consumer tech has declined sharply. Consumer tech VC deals fell by half from their 2021 peak of 3,000 transactions, with investors increasingly favouring AI investments instead. Nothing's distinctive feature includes a rear display for notifications, aimed at reducing screen time whilst users keep phones face down.

Nothing cuts over 100 jobs in restructuring push despite Phone (4b) sales success

Nothing, the UK tech company co-founded by Carl Pei, is restructuring its operations following the launch of its Nothing Phone (4b). Over 100 of the company's 800 employees globally could be affected by cuts, with around 25 positions at risk in the UK global marketing team, according to CityAM. Co-founder Akis Evangelidis denied reports that Nothing was exiting 12 markets, calling them "fake news". He confirmed the company is reorganising teams and introducing dedicated business units, including an AI-native division, whilst consolidating individual countries into regional hubs. The Phone (4b) sold 29,537 units on its first day, breaking records in its price segment. Evangelidis described the restructuring as a necessary step to position the company for its next phase of growth in personal computing.

Nothing's chief brand officer vibe-codes personal apps to reshape his workday

Charlie Smith, chief brand officer of consumer-tech company Nothing, believes fears about AI replacing jobs are overblown. Drawing parallels to previous technological shifts, he argues AI will create new opportunities rather than eliminate work. Smith has embraced "vibe-coding" since joining Nothing in January, building personal apps that organise his workday, manage travel and streamline communication. He has largely stopped typing, relying instead on Nothing's "Essential Voice" dictation tool, which removes filler words from spoken thoughts. Nothing deliberately avoids heavy AI branding, calling its products "essential" to emphasise utility over futuristic messaging. Smith believes AI scepticism stems from executives overstating artificial general intelligence to inflate valuations. He views AI primarily as a productivity tool for automating administrative tasks, freeing workers for creative problem-solving.

Charli XCX invests in consumer tech brand Nothing as first Global Brand Ambassador

Nothing, the consumer tech brand, has announced Charli XCX as its latest investor and first Global Brand Ambassador. The partnership goes beyond a traditional endorsement, with Charli investing in the company and helping shape future products. Nothing co-founder Carl Pei stated that the tech industry has become "quieter, more minimal, more monotonous", whilst Charli has taken pop music in the opposite direction. Charli XCX praised Nothing's ethos of prioritising creatives and its headphone design and sound quality. The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia are also investors in Nothing. Founded in 2020, the company produces smartphones, ChatGPT-integrated over-ear headphones and earbuds. Further details about the collaboration are expected to follow.
