Nedbank and high-profile partners in novel recruitment drive. Apr 21, 2026 Nedbank, in partnership with Otinga, OfferZen, Zindi, and Microsoft has opened registrations for the Nedbank Data Masters Challenge 2026, a national, high-performance data competition designed to identify and recruit South Africa's most advanced data professionals. With data and artificial intelligence playing a central role in reshaping financial services, the challenge reflects Nedbank's continued investment in data-driven innovation, advanced analytics, and future-focused talent. Registration for the external challenge closes at the end of April, ahead of the in-person master forum in early May. Unlike traditional student hackathons, the Nedbank Data Masters Challenge targets senior data practitioners, including data scientists, machine learning engineers, and data engineers. Participants will work on complex, real-world problem statements using anonymised Nedbank datasets, mirroring the depth and rigor of live enterprise environments. "This challenge is about more than competition," says to Nedbank group chief data and analytics officer, John Donnelly. "It reflects our belief that data excellence is a strategic capability. We are creating an opportunity for South Africa's top practitioners to demonstrate their skills on real banking challenges, while opening a clear pathway into impactful careers at Nedbank." The 2026 challenge comprises two specialist tracks: * Machine Learning/Data Science, hosted on Zindi, Africa's largest data science platform with over 100 000 practitioners. * Data Engineering, hosted on Otinga, a platform focused on advanced technical assessment and capability building Participants compete asynchronously over approximately four weeks in a virtual format, allowing professionals nationwide to participate while balancing work commitments. The competition culminates in an in-person finale on 9 May in Johannesburg, where the top 50 performers will be invited to Nedbank for live technical interrogation and engagement with the bank's senior data leadership. A combined R500 000 prize pool will be awarded across both tracks, reinforcing the prestige-led nature of the challenge. In collaboration with partners including OfferZen, Zindi, Otinga, and Microsoft, the challenge connects top talent directly with career opportunities at leading organisations. Direct pathway into Nedbank careers Top performers will benefit from a direct recruitment pathway, with outreach initiated within three business days of the final round and first interviews scheduled within 14 days. OfferZen, alongside Nedbank and other partners, will play a key role in connecting participants to broader career opportunities in South Africa's data ecosystem. "Attracting scarce digital and data skills remains a priority for the financial services sector," says Donnelly. "Through initiatives like the Data Masters Challenge, we are not only identifying exceptional talent but also strengthening South Africa's broader data ecosystem."
