OpenClaw Foundation

OpenClaw Foundation

Non-profit steward of open-source, self-hosted AI

Overview

OpenClaw Foundation manages and maintains the OpenClaw open-source project as a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It serves as a neutral steward for AI, aiming to keep AI personal and accessible. The project is a self-hosted, autonomous local-first AI assistant that runs on a user’s own hardware, letting it interact with local files and apps and perform tasks like shell commands, browser control, calendar and email management. It also connects to messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord via a multi-channel gateway and can be controlled through a web dashboard. The architecture is open and extensible, with a community-driven “skill” system for new capabilities. OpenClaw is MIT-licensed and independent, supported in part by sponsorship from OpenAI, with leadership from Peter Steinberger and Dave Morin. The goal is to give people a private, customizable AI that works locally and remains under community control rather than centralized cloud systems.
