Organically Grown Company

Organically Grown Company

Grower-owned cooperative distributing organic produce

Overview

Organically Grown Company distributes organic produce in the Pacific Northwest through a grower-led cooperative, sourcing from member farms and delivering to retailers and consumers. Its governance and profits are shared among growers and employees, and its structure has evolved from a nonprofit to a grower-owned cooperative, then an S-Corp, and finally an ESOP; in 2018 it placed its shares into the Sustainable Food and Agriculture Perpetual Purpose Trust, the first U.S. company owned by a perpetual purpose trust. This trust prevents the company from being sold and requires it to operate to support organic agriculture and benefit its community. Its goal is to maintain a sustainable, mission-driven business that benefits organic growers, coworkers, and customers over the long term.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • OGC acquired Johansen Ranch in March 2025, securing organic citrus supply.
  • March 2026 plastic-free Ladybug net bags won NEXTY and entered pilot distribution.
  • February 2026 SFAPPT gathering confirmed ongoing stakeholder support across growers, customers, and coworkers.

What critics are saying

  • Pacific Coast Fruit and Charlie's Produce intensify Northwest distribution competition after 2021 expansions.
  • OGC's 300-person workforce and nine-figure scale create brittle execution risk during supply shocks.
  • Trust ownership blocks exit-value optionality; if margins compress, capital access tightens by 2027.

What makes Organically Grown Company unique

  • SFAPPT ownership locks OGC into purpose-led independence, preventing sale forever.
  • OGC runs Portland, Eugene, Medford, Seattle, and Spokane hubs with LEED warehouse logistics.
  • Brenna Davis led OGC into 2026 national visibility, including Organic Produce Summit keynote.
