Builds AI assistants that capture meeting notes

Overview

Otter.ai builds AI meeting assistants for professionals, students, and teams that turn spoken conversations into searchable notes and summaries. Its meeting assistant joins calls on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, capturing what people say and organizing decisions and action items for later review. Users follow live transcripts, identify speakers, and share recordings with colleagues, while mobile apps also record lectures and in-person discussions. The company sells subscriptions for individuals and business teams, with a free entry plan and enterprise contracts that add administrative controls. Otter.ai was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Mountain View, California.

Otter introduces AI meeting tools for preparation, coaching and follow-up.

Otter introduces AI meeting tools for preparation, coaching and follow-up. Search. Otter.ai, the leading AI notetaker and conversational knowledge platform, today announced a new set of capabilities that brings its proprietary AI to every stage of the meeting before, during, and after. Work Mode and Live Assist help people arrive with context, get private guidance in the moment, and turn conversations into useful work - so meetings actually move work forward. Too often, context gets lost before the meeting even starts: 48% of employees and 52% of leaders surveyed say work feels chaotic and fragmented (Microsoft Work Trend Index, 2025). Once the call starts, focus drifts, and about 35% of meetings are seen as unproductive by those who attend them (LSE Inclusion Initiative, 2024). Then, when the meeting ends, teams struggle to coordinate: 87% of knowledge workers say they lack the time or capacity to coordinate across customers and teams (Atlassian State of Teams, 2026). For a large enterprise, unproductive meetings cost more than $130 million a year (Jabra The Cost of Bad Meetings, 2026). Behind these numbers are professionals who want to prepare, engage, and follow up, but don't have the time or ready access to information. That's what Otter's new capabilities are solving. Otter already helps more than 40 million users capture what's said in their meetings, generating over $1.5 billion in customer ROI through time saved. These new capabilities take it a step further, at every stage of the meeting. * Before: Work Mode. Work Mode goes beyond chat by using conversation context and connected apps to produce finished work, starting with a pre-meeting brief in seconds. It pulls from every past conversation with a customer, open action items, what has worked for teammates on similar calls, and the latest files from connected apps like Google Drive, replacing ten minutes or more of digging with an automated pre-meeting brief before every call. Soon, users won't even have to ask: Otter will automatically deliver a short, private brief by email and inside Otter before every meeting, so users arrive prepared without manual work. * During: Live Assist. Otter's Live Assist provides real-time, private coaching that surfaces proactive tips based on what's been, and is being, discussed. It appears as a small, unobtrusive prompt within the virtual meeting window on Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet, so users don't have to leave their call. Sales reps can get prompts for competitor mentions, pricing objections, and next discovery questions, while recruiters can get nudges to cover scorecard criteria and confirm compensation and availability. Live Assist is fully customizable. Teams can build custom agents powered by their own playbooks and methodology, so every tip is relevant, vetted, and accurate. "Live Assist is really helpful for those moments on a call when you think, 'We talked about this last week, but I forgot,' because it's right there," said Mallory Abernethy, VP of Strategy & Enablement at Keynes. "It has already saved our sales and strategy teams on many calls, and it empowers them with an aligned talk track on our CTV platform while still allowing their creativity and personality to come through." * After: Work Mode. After the call, Work Mode turns conversation context and connected apps into finished work. It can turn a customer's last five calls into a point-of-view document, draft a proposal or contract as a PDF, generate an offer letter from a final interview, or complete a candidate scorecard. It also updates CRM records and writes follow-up emails, all ready to review and send, nearly instantly. "Before, prep meant piecing together old call notes, emails, and CRM entries, and follow-up meant re-typing it all afterward. Now, Otter's Work Mode gives my team a brief before every call and has their follow-ups and CRM updates ready right after," said Andrew Gray, founder and managing director of Potentia Capital. "Everything from one conversation feeds the prep for the next, so every call builds on the last and nothing falls through the cracks." Unlike tools tied to a single platform or function, Otter works wherever conversations happen, from Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet to conference rooms and the field, and supports teams across sales, recruiting, customer success, and more. "The best meetings are won before they start and decided by what happens after and we've built Otter to support the whole arc: prepared going in, coached in the moment, and following through when it's over," said Sam Liang, co-founder and CEO of Otter.ai. "That means less time lost to prep and follow-up, more time on the conversation itself, and teams that get more done with every meeting. That's what it looks like when Otter powers the conversation and the work that follows." The launch comes one week after Otter announced $320 million in growth financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund (CVF), which will accelerate product innovation and global expansion as Otter builds toward becoming the definitive conversation knowledge layer for enterprises. Work Mode is available today for all paid users. Live Assist is available today to enterprise customers and will roll out to all paid users over the next few weeks. Learn more here. Otter is kicking off the launch with a live virtual event today at 9:00am PT | 12:00pm ET, featuring an opening announcement from Liang followed by live demos of each capability. Register here.

Otter adds 'Work' mode to automate more meeting-related tasks.

Otter adds 'Work' mode to automate more meeting-related tasks. By GIXnews / October 28, 2026 Otter has added a new Work mode to its AI Chat assistant, expanding the range of tasks it can carry out before and after meetings. It's part of a wider drive by Otter - which received $320 million in funding last week - to move beyond meeting transcription and into automating tasks and workflows. The Work interface, announced Tuesday, is accessible in the AI Chat prompt box, alongside the Chat option. While Chat allows users to ask questions, generate content, and retrieve information, Work is aimed at multi-step actions, Otter said. It's a similar approach to other AI assistants, such as Claude and ChatGPT, that separate simpler chat functionality from newer agentic capabilities. Prior to a meeting, Otter users can prompt Work to generate briefing documents based on information collated from previous calls and data from connected applications. After a meeting ends, the AI assistant can draft emails, generate documents - including Word and Notion docs, PDFs, and interactive web pages - and update Salesforce records. The AI assistant requires human approval before completing tasks, an Otter spokesperson said. The capabilities expand on functions already available with AI Chat's existing Advanced mode. Otter will now remove the Express and Advanced options from the AI Chat interface. Work mode is available now to all paid Otter users. There are no usage limits, Otter said - this differs from the Chat mode, which allocates a certain number of queries each month depending on a customer's payment plan. The feature updates reflect how meeting note taking is rapidly moving from data capture to workflow automation, said Irwin Lazar, principal analyst at Metrigy. "That is, vendors are delivering solutions that allow meeting notes to be actionable, based on context both from within meetings, as well as from other connected platforms," he said. Lazar pointed to similar functionality emerging in other meeting systems such as Microsoft's facilitator in Teams and Cisco's Webex meeting agent. The vast majority (91%) of business users want meeting note-takers to access and act on context from outside a meeting, according to a global study of 403 organizations in Metrigy's "Workplace Collaboration & Employee Experience: 2027" report. In addition to the Work mode, Otter announced that its Live Assist feature is now available to enterprise customers, and will expand access to all paid Otter accounts in the coming weeks. Live Assist, announced in April, provides private guidance to a user during a call, such as suggesting questions and tracking meeting "objectives." "I see this kind of widget assist a lot in external-facing customer support roles, but for internal productivity meetings, this is quite unique," said Thomas Randall, a research director at Infotech. However he said that Otter faces from other meeting software vendors which are also integrating AI capabilities into their platforms. "So I don't see Otter becoming a center of work, though its new functionality will be of great assistance to pre-existing users," said Randall. AI notetakers at work could leave companies at risk for lawsuits

Otter.ai secures $320 million to expand AI meeting assistant globally.

Otter.ai secures $320 million to expand AI meeting assistant globally. Tl;dr. * Otter.ai has secured $320 million in non-dilutive financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund, with repayment tied to marketing performance rather than equity. * The meeting note-taking startup plans to use the capital to accelerate enterprise growth, expand go-to-market efforts, and extend its international reach. * The deal highlights surging investor interest in profitable AI productivity tools as Otter pushes product innovation beyond transcription into full meeting intelligence. A new kind of bet on AI productivity. Otter.ai, the AI meeting assistant best known for real-time transcription and automated notes, has landed one of the largest financings in its history - a $320 million investment from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. Unlike a traditional venture round, the financing is non-dilutive, meaning Otter.ai founders and existing shareholders will not give up equity. Instead, repayment is tied directly to marketing performance and revenue generated from customer acquisition, a structure General Catalyst has increasingly used to help late-stage startups scale without adding balance-sheet debt or dilution. The company confirmed the funding will be deployed specifically to supercharge growth initiatives, not general operations. Why non-dilutive, and why now. The Customer Value Fund, part of General Catalyst, focuses on providing growth capital backed by predictable customer lifetime value. For companies with strong unit economics and high retention - like subscription-based AI tools - the model offers an alternative to raising another equity round at an uncertain valuation or taking on venture debt. For Otter.ai, which says it has passed tens of millions of users and serves hundreds of thousands of business teams, the timing is strategic. The AI notetaker market has become fiercely competitive, with Microsoft Copilot, Zoom AI Companion, Google Duet AI, and startups like Fireflies, Fathom, and Read AI all vying for enterprise meeting workflows. By securing non-dilutive capital, Otter can spend aggressively on customer acquisition while preserving optionality for a future IPO or traditional primary raise. Fueling enterprise growth. A core pillar of the plan is enterprise expansion. While Otter initially grew through viral adoption by students, journalists, and individual professionals, it has spent the last two years pivoting upmarket. The new funds will be used to grow its enterprise sales team, deepen compliance and security features like SOC 2, HIPAA, and SSO support, and build custom deployments for large organizations in regulated industries including healthcare, legal, finance, and education. Otter has already launched Otter Business and Otter Enterprise tiers with admin controls, domain capture, and centralized billing - tools designed to convert bottom-up individual usage into company-wide contracts. Go-To-Market expansion. The financing is explicitly tied to go-to-market performance, and much of it will be recycled directly into sales and marketing. Expect a major ramp in digital acquisition, partnerships with conferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, and expanded channel partnerships. The company also plans to invest in its self-serve funnel to convert its massive base of free users into paying subscribers. Executives have framed the strategy as efficient scaling: using capital where customer acquisition cost payback is proven, rather than burning cash on untested bets. International reach on the roadmap. Another priority is international growth. Otter remains strongest in the U.S., but demand for multilingual meeting summarization is rising fast in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The company plans to use part of the $320 million to localize its product, expand language support beyond English, Spanish, and French, and build regional go-to-market teams. Improved real-time translation, regional data residency, and compliance with GDPR and other local regulations are expected to be key enablers. Beyond transcription: product innovation. Otter insists this is not just a growth round - it's also a product round. The startup is evolving from a transcription utility into a full AI meeting intelligence platform. Recent and planned innovations include Otter AI Chat for querying past meetings, automated action-item detection and follow-up drafting, sales call insights, and deeper integrations with Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot, and Notion. With fresh capital for R&D, Otter aims to invest further in proprietary speech models for higher accuracy in noisy environments and accented speech, as well as agent-like features that can auto-join meetings, draft emails, and update project management tools. What it signals for the AI market. The $320 million deal underscores a broader shift in AI funding. As investors grow more selective about capital-intensive foundation model companies, profitable, application-layer AI startups with real revenue and retention are commanding premium, creative financing. For General Catalyst, the bet is a vote of confidence that AI meeting assistants are not a commodity feature, but a sticky enterprise workflow worth scaling globally. If Otter executes on its enterprise, international, and product roadmap, the non-dilutive round could set the stage for its next major milestone - whether that's a blockbuster equity raise or a path to public markets. These meetings are the work for them. That's either customer conversations or, from a sales standpoint. That's where strategies are discussed. But meetings are terribly inefficient because when you come into a meeting, you spend the first twenty minutes recapping what was said before to catch everybody up."
