Biotech companies focused on protein engineering are attracting substantial funding as computational advances transform the field into a more predictable discipline. Recent deals include Outpace Bio's $144 million round for cancer immunotherapies, Protego Biopharma's oversubscribed $130 million Series B for AL amyloidosis, and AI Proteins' $41.5 million raise for de novo miniprotein design. Infrastructure players are also gaining traction. Nuclera secured $75 million for its protein production platform, whilst Tierra Biosciences raised $11.4 million for cell-free protein creation systems. Fable Therapeutics attracted $43.5 million for metabolic protein research targeting obesity. The funding surge reflects a shift towards de-risked science and clinical readiness. Investors are prioritising companies with solid data and clear development pathways, marking a departure from earlier biotech speculation. The convergence of AI, synthetic biology and clinical insight has made protein research more engineerable and commercially viable.
Outpace also announced that Jake Simson, PhD, Partner at RA Capital Management has been appointed to the company's Board of Directors.

Outpace Bio, a Seattle startup using AI to design proteins for cancer therapies targeting solid tumors, has raised $144 million to test its treatments in clinical settings. The company aims to enhance T cell performance against solid tumors while minimizing side effects. Co-founders Marc Lajoie and Scott Boyken, former University of Washington postdoctoral fellows, launched Outpace in 2021 after working with Dr. Stan Riddell at Lyell Immunopharma.
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Playground Global, an early-stage, deep-tech venture firm that invests in founders building category-defining businesses at the forefront of science and technology, today announced that Benjamin Kim PhD, has been promoted to Partner. Ben focuses on identifying founders and companies that are revolutionizing engineered biology, building the future of emerging modality therapeutics development, and unlocking AI and ML workflows to refactor drug development. Ben joined Playground as a Venture Fellow in 2019 while completing his PhD in bioengineering at Stanford University.
