Outpace Bio

Outpace Bio

AI-designed proteins guide engineered cell therapies

Overview

Outpace Bio develops AI-powered protein design to create proteins that program engineered cells for improved cancer therapy. It focuses on solid tumors by designing proteins that guide immune responses, boost potency and persistence, and enhance safety and specificity, enabling cell therapies to better recognize and eliminate cancer in the body. The platform can power any cell type and manufacturing approach, making it a versatile option in biotech. The company aims to cure solid tumors by overcoming tumor immune suppression, increasing cell therapy durability, and improving efficacy and safety across diverse cancer indications.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Outpace closed a $144 million Series B in August 2024, led by RA Capital.
  • Three clinical sites were activated by January 2026 for OPB-101.
  • Wayne State approved OPB-201-BSKT-101A in April 2026, widening the clinical base.

What critics are saying

  • OPB-101 still lacks human efficacy data after its 2026 early-clinical launch.
  • OPB-201 remained IND-enabling in August 2026, leaving one program behind schedule.
  • Solid-tumor CAR-T deaths at Bristol Myers, Kite, and Allogene threaten Outpace's category entirely.

What makes Outpace Bio unique

  • Outpace Bio's 2026 pipeline pairs AI protein design with cell therapy engineering.
  • OPB-101 targets mesothelin solid tumors with four proprietary technologies, not one generic edit.
  • Founders Marc Lajoie and Scott Boyken built Outpace from Lyell Immunopharma and UW protein design.

Biotech protein innovators secure over $495M as AI-driven design accelerates drug development

Biotech companies focused on protein engineering are attracting substantial funding as computational advances transform the field into a more predictable discipline. Recent deals include Outpace Bio's $144 million round for cancer immunotherapies, Protego Biopharma's oversubscribed $130 million Series B for AL amyloidosis, and AI Proteins' $41.5 million raise for de novo miniprotein design. Infrastructure players are also gaining traction. Nuclera secured $75 million for its protein production platform, whilst Tierra Biosciences raised $11.4 million for cell-free protein creation systems. Fable Therapeutics attracted $43.5 million for metabolic protein research targeting obesity. The funding surge reflects a shift towards de-risked science and clinical readiness. Investors are prioritising companies with solid data and clear development pathways, marking a departure from earlier biotech speculation. The convergence of AI, synthetic biology and clinical insight has made protein research more engineerable and commercially viable.
