PGA TOUR

Organizes professional golf tours and media

Overview

PGA Tour organizes professional golf tours worldwide and runs a media and entertainment brand around golf events. It monetizes through long-term broadcast rights, digital streaming, sponsorships, and its PGA Tour Enterprises arm that manages broadcasts, events, and hospitality; event surpluses are donated to local charities. It differs by combining a large-scale tour with a for-profit enterprise, a player-ownership and private equity approach, a formal development ladder from Korn Ferry Tour to the PGA Tour, and data-driven fan experiences. Its goal is to grow professional golf's reach globally while maximizing value for players, sponsors, fans, and communities.

PGA Tour lures another NFL exec to lead media strategy.

PGA Tour lures another NFL exec to lead media strategy. Will Deng, the NFL's head of corporate strategy, will join the PGA Tour as its new SVP of media strategy. Brian Rolapp is continuing to bring some of his old NFL colleagues on board at the PGA Tour. Rolapp, the former head of the NFL's media businesses who took the job of PGA Tour CEO last summer, has made another key hire from the NFL's executive ranks. According to a report by Josh Carpenter and Ben Fischer in Sports Business Journal, Rolapp has lured Will Deng, the NFL's head of corporate strategy, to join the PGA Tour as its new SVP of media strategy. Video Muted Deng spent 11 years at the NFL, managing some of the league's pivotal projects in its transition to a more digitally focused media strategy. Per SBJ, Deng headed the NFL's effort to stream its first-ever online broadcast, a Jaguars-Bills tilt from London that was livestreamed on Yahoo and averaged 2.36 million viewers. That game eventually paved the way for the NFL's Thursday Night Football package to become a streaming exclusive, with Amazon's Prime Video paying the league $1 billion per year for rights to the series. Deng will be tasked with leading the PGA Tour through its next round of media rights negotiations. The Tour's linear broadcast agreements with CBS and NBC, and digital deal with ESPN for PGA Tour Live, all expire following the 2030 season. However, the PGA Tour plans to take those rights to market in late 2028. The end of the decade will prove a busy time in the sports media rights marketplace, with significant inventory for the NFL, MLB, NHL, SEC, and others all becoming available around that time. The crowded market will make it all the more important for the PGA Tour to have someone like Deng navigating these deals.

PGA Tour ditches server trucks for AI broadcasts as Amazon's Jassy projects AWS towards $1T revenue

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told investors that AWS could reach $1 trillion in annual revenue, as the cloud division posted $42.2 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 37.6% year-over-year. This marks AWS's fastest growth in 18 quarters and its fifth consecutive quarter of acceleration. The PGA Tour illustrates the pattern driving growth. The organisation moved its infrastructure from physical server trucks to AWS cloud services, then layered AI capabilities on top. Using Amazon Bedrock, the tour now generates betting profiles, produces thousands of content pieces weekly, and launched AI-generated commentary and automated broadcasts. Jassy said roughly 85% of global IT spending remains on-premise, an equation he expects to flip over the next 10 to 20 years. Amazon disclosed that Bedrock revenue in the second quarter exceeded all prior quarters combined since launching in 2023.
