CHEST Lung Donation Workshop to spotlight innovation, collaboration and opportunities to expand lung transplantation. As lung transplantation continues to evolve through advances in donor management, preservation technologies, and donation after circulatory death (DCD), multidisciplinary collaboration has become increasingly essential to expanding access to lifesaving transplants. To help advance that collaboration, The Alliance, in partnership with the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), will present the CHEST Lung Donation Workshop on Monday, September 14, as a specialty pre-meeting preceding the 2026 National Critical Issues Forum in New Orleans. The meeting is sponsored by Paragonix Technologies. The half-day workshop will bring together pulmonologists, critical care physicians, transplant surgeons, organ procurement organization (OPO) professionals, transplant coordinators, and other donation and transplantation leaders for an interactive program focused on addressing some of the most significant clinical and operational challenges affecting lung donation today. "Lung donation continues to represent one of the greatest opportunities to improve access to transplantation, but realizing that potential requires close collaboration across disciplines," says Kevin Myer, President and CEO of LifeGift in Houston and a member of the planning committee for this workshop. "This workshop brings together experts from critical care, pulmonary medicine, transplantation, and organ donation to examine current evidence, discuss evolving practices, and identify practical strategies that can help more donor lungs reach patients waiting for a transplant." Rather than focusing solely on emerging research, the workshop is designed to encourage discussion among clinicians and donation professionals responsible for every stage of the donation process, from donor management through recipient acceptance. Participants will begin with a data-driven examination of the current state of lung donation before exploring evolving approaches to donor management during DCD recovery. Faculty representing cardiac recovery, lung transplantation, and critical care will provide complementary perspectives on managing potential lung donors while balancing the needs of multiple organ recovery teams. Additional sessions will examine advances in lung preservation technologies, recent and anticipated OPTN policy developments, and interactive case discussions that challenge participants to evaluate complex donor scenarios and discuss factors influencing lung acceptance decisions. The program concludes with a collaborative discussion highlighting key insights and opportunities to strengthen lung donation practices across the country. The workshop reflects a growing recognition that improving lung utilization depends not only on scientific and technological advances, but also on stronger communication and shared decision-making among the professionals responsible for donor evaluation, organ recovery, preservation, transportation, and transplantation. The CHEST Lung Donation Workshop is one of four specialty pre-meeting programs offered in advance of the 2026 National Critical Issues Forum. Together, these workshops provide immersive educational experiences that allow participants to explore critical issues in greater depth while fostering collaboration among professionals from across the donation and transplantation continuum.
