Bright and early on a Tuesday morning, this reporter started her day being driven around by a robot. Almost exactly two years after it was announced, the Philadelphia Navy Yardā€™s autonomous shuttle pilot has started operating, transporting guests and employees around the South Philly campus. The self-driving shuttle felt like any other bus, stopping and starting smoothly (ok, maybe not like most other busesā€¦) at all intersections. It automatically halts at each designated stop on its route, and automatically slows down if it senses vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians swerving around it

Navy Yardā€™S Autonomous Shuttle Will Start Transporting People In 2024

The next time you get in a shuttle at the Navy Yard in South Philly, it could be driving itself. The Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporationā€™s (PIDC) autonomous vehicle shuttle pilot for visitors and Navy Yard employees will be launching in early January. PIDC first announced the project in February 2022 in partnership with Virginia-based Perrone Robotics. The projectā€™s testing phase started about a year ago.
