Pfeifer & Langen is a European sugar producer that processes sugar beets into refined sugar and related products. The company operates across about 25 sites in Europe and generates around 1.4 billion euros in revenue. Its products come from beets grown locally; sugar is extracted and refined through industrial processes and then packaged for sale to customers across various markets. Compared with rivals, Pfeifer & Langen emphasizes a long-standing tradition (founded in 1870), a broad European footprint, and a culture of teamwork and shared growth, aiming to responsible, steady expansion rather than rapid, flashy changes. The company’s goal is to sweeten daily life worldwide by leveraging community, responsibility, and persistent progress to grow together with its employees and partners.

Groundbreaking ceremony in Könnern: biogas plant expands sustainable use of sugar beets. June 22, 2026 On June 17, 2026, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of a biogas and biomethane plant at the Könnern site of sugar producer Pfeifer & Langen. This tailor-made project sends a clear signal in favor of an overall concept that is both sustainable and economical, with the consistent use of existing resources. The plant is designed to process up to 150,000 metric tons of sugar beet pulp and approximately 20,000 metric tons of beet by-products directly from production each year. The raw materials are fermented into biogas through a controlled fermentation process, yielding approximately 150,000 megawatt-hours of biogas per year. In a second step, the biogas is processed into high-quality biomethane and fed into the gas grid. Energy consumption is optimized by utilizing existing waste heat from the sugar factory. The remaining fermentation products are returned to agriculture, closing the material cycle. Krieg & Fischer Ingenieure GmbH is proud to be providing the engineering services for the biogas plant and to be part of this ambitious project. Following the groundbreaking ceremony, construction is now underway: Its engineering firm will continue to support, coordinate, and oversee all phases of construction through to commissioning, drawing on its many years of experience in biogas and energy technology.
