Polygon to invest $4M to increase medical manufacturing capacity in Walkerton. Posted Monday, August 3, 2026 7:00 am News Release Polygon Company, a manufacturer of filament-wound composite components for medical device and industrial markets, announced a $4 million investment to expand and modernize its medical manufacturing operations in Walkerton, St. Joseph's County. The project increases Polygon's medical production capacity by 10 times to keep pace with growing demand from surgical robotics, catheter, and other medical device manufactures. The investment, covering new production equipment, facility upgrades, and workforce training, will create 35 new medical manufacturing jobs in Walkerton over the next five years, with average plant wages 9% above the mean for South Bend area production jobs[1]. "Walkerton has been home to Polygon for 75 years, and this expansion is our clearest statement yet that it will be home for many more," said J.A. Lacy, Polygon's Board Chair. "We're creating good jobs, investing in our people, and building the capacity to help our medical customers meet a growing need." Other items that may interest you
Polygon invests $4 million to expand Walkerton medical device manufacturing. News release. WALKERTON - Composite manufacturer Polygon Co. will invest $4 million to expand its Walkerton operations. "We're proud to announce a multi-million investment in our Walkerton, Indiana medical manufacturing operations," the company announced in a news release posted to LinkedIn. "This expansion will create 35 new jobs, increase our production capacity, and strengthen our engineering and applications teams." The project is expected to increase the company's medical manufacturing capacity by a factor of 10 during the next five years. Hiring will include production employees, CNC machinists, engineers, supervisors and quality specialists. The investment includes new Swiss CNC equipment, additional pultrusion lines and advanced inspection technology designed to improve manufacturing accuracy for small, highly engineered components. The company also is introducing Bluetooth-enabled production systems and multi-sensor measurement equipment to strengthen quality control throughout the manufacturing process. Polygon engineers develop each medical component to meet the specifications of individual device manufacturers by customizing resin systems, glass reinforcements and other material characteristics. The company's composite tubing is increasingly used as an alternative to stainless steel because it combines high strength with dielectric properties that help electrically isolate surgical instruments. Medical products account for roughly one-fifth of Polygon's revenue, but company officials expect the segment to approach 30% of sales as the market continues to expand. "Today, Polygon manufactures more than 1.3 million precision medical components each year, including components used in surgical robotics," the company said. "This investment reflects our continued commitment to our employees, our customers, our community, and the future of medical manufacturing." Founded in 1949, Polygon operates two manufacturing facilities in Walkerton, producing composite tubes and components for medical, transportation, agriculture and construction markets. The company manufactures medical components each year for customers including Medtronic, Baxter, Coloplast and Apyx, while also supplying industrial manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Honeywell and John Deere.
