Range Energy

Manufactures electric-powered trailers for decarbonizing trucking

Overview

Range Energy designs and builds powered and intelligent trailers that attach to standard tractors to cut fuel use and emissions in heavy-duty trucking. Its flagship RA-01 is a 53-foot electric trailer with an e-axle and a 200 or 300 kWh battery that measures hitch force and adds propulsion through its own axle, letting the tractor behave like it’s pulling an empty trailer. The system can power auxiliary loads (like refrigeration) and works with Thermo King, while a telematics platform provides fleet insights on emissions, routes, and maintenance. Unlike rivals, Range Energy offers a retrofit solution with direct sales (and potential leasing/service) to large fleets, focusing on immediate decarbonization without replacing tractors to speed up electrification.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Range says first deliveries arrive late 2026, with volume deliveries in 2027.
  • Dot Transportation pilot targets 2,600 trailers, validating refrigerated deployments at scale.
  • May 2026 ACT Expo testing showed 47-67% mpg gains on RB-01.

What critics are saying

  • Range still sells pilots, not volume product, so late-2026 deliveries are execution-critical.
  • A 2026 slip versus ZF's promised customer deliveries will slow fleet adoption.
  • If freight carriers reject trailer-price economics, Range's standalone hardware model dies.

What makes Range Energy unique

  • Trailer-side electrification preserves tractors, avoiding fleet replacement and depot rebuilds.
  • ZF's AxTrax 2 integration gives Range a Tier-1 driveline partner.
  • Thermo King and Sibros partnerships extend refrigeration and telematics beyond propulsion.

Range Energy Debuts Its Next Generation Electric-Powered Trailer System, The Rb-01, At The Advanced Clean Transportation Expo

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Range Energy (Range), the company bringing powered trailers to the commercial trucking market, today debuted its next generation electric-powered trailer system, the RB-01, at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo. The RB-01 is the next iteration in Range’s series of trailer systems with initial tests yielding 47-67 percent miles-per-gallon (mpg) improvements, equivalent to a 32-40 percent reduction in fuel costs. Notably, during its transit to ACT, the tractor towing the RB-01 achieved 18.1 mpg during the final 281.6 miles between Bakersfield, CA and Las Vegas, NV. The results from this trip included a 2,000-foot net elevation gain and 12,000 feet total of climbing with ambient temperatures as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The electric-powered trailer system includes an e-axle, 200 or 300 kWh battery pack, and smart kingpin, and is built with hardware and software components that are sourced from Range’s supply chain partners. Improved results shown by the RB-01 highlight Range’s continued progression of its trailer system to ease the transition to electric for fleet owners and operators, and in doing so, significantly reduces emissions and improves the efficiency of fleets’ diesel-powered heavy-duty trucks in the near-term
