Rheem launches variable-speed air-source heat pump.

Rheem launches variable-speed air-source heat pump. The RP17AY system is a variable-speed, inverter-driven air-source heat pump using R-454B refrigerant, designed for universal replacement applications with high seasonal efficiency. 16 Jun 2026 US-based heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) and water heating products provider Rheem has launched a new heat pump for residential applications. "Engineered for universal installation compatibility, the unit pairs easily with nearly any R-454B HVAC system, offering a solution for common replacement and new construction," the manufacturer said in a statement. "The RP17AY heat pump can also be installed with nearly any indoor component as a universal replacement with minimal modifications, using Rheem's system control algorithm." The system measures 991 mm x 908 mm x 908 mm and weighs 125 kg. The new product offers nominal capacities from 2 to 5 tons, covering a cooling range of approximately 22,000 to 57,000 British thermal units per hour (BTU/h), with the largest model delivering 60,000 BTU/h of nominal cooling capacity. The system operates on a 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz power supply and uses an inverter-driven twin rotary compressor with variable-speed modulation from roughly 35% to 100%, supported by a brushless direct current (BLDC) condenser fan motor. In terms of efficiency, the unit achieves a seasonal energy efficiency ratio 2 (SEER2) of up to 17 for cooling, up to 11.7 energy efficiency ratio 2 (EER2), and up to 9.5 heating seasonal performance factor 2 (HSPF2), according to the company. It uses R-454B refrigerant, a low global warming potential (GWP) A2L refrigerant classified as mildly flammable, and incorporates an integrated refrigerant detection and automatic shutdown system, along with built-in A2L safety mitigation measures. Sound levels are as low as approximately 55 dB under typical operating conditions, depending on installation and load. Rheem said the system is designed as a universal replacement solution intended to reduce complexity in retrofit projects. It is compatible with both communicating and legacy 24V non-communicating controls, allowing it to integrate with a wide range of existing indoor coils and air handlers without requiring extensive system redesign. It also supports multiple installation scenarios through standardized control logic and flexible system pairing, making it suitable for contractors working in replacement-heavy residential markets. The RP17AY also integrates Rheem's connected EcoNet ecosystem, offering Bluetooth-enabled commissioning, onboard diagnostics, and remote monitoring capabilities. These features are designed to streamline installation and servicing while enabling ongoing system optimization, the company said. More about

Heat Pump Week showcases the growing role of Heat pumps in sustainable homes.

Heat Pump Week showcases the growing role of Heat pumps in sustainable homes. April 27, 2026 Heat Pump Week is a national awareness initiative highlighting how heat pump technology supports energy efficiency and lower-carbon homes. Bringing together manufacturers, educators, contractors, and community organizations, the week focuses on workforce training and real-world applications that demonstrate how heat pumps are being adopted across the U.S. During this year's Heat Pump Week, Rheem(R) participated in events and programs that emphasized education, community impact, and the expanding role of heat pumps in residential heating, cooling, and water heating. Workforce training and education in California. As part of Heat Pump Week activities, Rheem supported a hands-on training event at the Center for Employment Training (CET) in San Jose, held in partnership with the California Heat Pump Partnership. In addition to Rheem's team of trainers and technical experts, Joao Escorio - a master plumber and social media influencer known as @joaotheplumber - was on hand to provide students with real-world advice about the trade and to illustrate how dedication and hard work can lead to a successful career. Workforce development is increasingly critical as demand grows for heat pump technology. Rheem is a proud partner of training programs like these, which help prepare future HVAC technicians and plumbers to install and maintain high-efficiency heat pump equipment. Community participation. In addition to education efforts, Rheem contributed to community-level, grass roots adoption with the donation of ProTerra(R) hybrid electric heat pump water heaters and Fujitsu heat pump mini-split air systems to two homes in Richmond, California. These installations replaced conventional gas systems with highly efficient electric alternatives, helping homeowners improve comfort while reducing energy use. Programs like Heat Pump Week demonstrate how community / corporate partnerships can make heat pump adoption more accessible, particularly in communities that may face financial or structural barriers to adoption. A broad leadership role in Heat Pump technology. Rheem's involvement reflects its broader position in the market as one of the few manufacturers producing heat pumps for both space heating and cooling as well as water heating. This dual focus supports a more integrated, whole-home approach to heat pump technology in consumer households. Heat pumps are the most efficient ways to heat water and condition indoor spaces. That efficiency, combined with strong performance, is why they are becoming a foundational element of modern home design. Performance, cost, and long-term value. While upfront cost remains a consideration, heat pump systems can offer meaningful long-term savings through reduced energy consumption. Incentives from utilities and local programs can further improve affordability, helping shorten payback periods for homeowners. Reliability remains a key factor in adoption, and modern heat pump systems are engineered to deliver consistent performance while supporting long-term sustainability goals. Looking ahead. Heat Pump Week highlights how education, workforce training, and community-based programs are accelerating the transition to efficient heat pumps, as Rheem continues to play a leadership role in shaping how heat pump technology is deployed in the built environment.
