Waste management firm Republic Services trades at 28.2x forward P/E despite underwhelming performance. The company's annual sales growth of 4.2% over the past two years lagged industry peers, whilst flat unit sales suggest it may need to cut prices to accelerate growth. Wall Street estimates indicate continued weakness, with projected growth of just 4.8% over the next year. In contrast, pest control provider Rollins demonstrated exceptional revenue growth of 11.3% annually over five years, with market share gains and a robust free cash flow margin of 16.1%. The company's gross margin of 52.2% reflects its mission-critical offerings. Karat Packaging, a distributor of disposable foodservice packaging, posted 9.8% annual sales growth over two years. Its earnings per share grew 25.7% annually during this period, outpacing revenue growth.
Rollins Inc., the Atlanta-based pest and wildlife control services company, has underperformed the market significantly. The stock has fallen 36.9% over the past year whilst the S&P 500 gained 20.2%. In 2025, it declined 39.2% against the index's 13.2% rise. The company's second-quarter results disappointed investors. Revenue reached $1.1 billion, missing Wall Street forecasts. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $236.3 million, below expectations with margin compression. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.32 also fell short of estimates, causing shares to drop 9.3% on 23 July. Analysts maintain a "moderate buy" consensus on the stock, though sentiment has turned more bearish. Of 17 analysts covering Rollins, six rate it "strong buy", one "moderate buy", seven "hold", one "moderate sell", and two "strong sell". The mean price target of $45.07 suggests 23.4% upside potential.
Conestoga Capital Advisors released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, reporting positive market conditions for small-cap stocks. The Russell 2000 Index achieved its best first half since 1991, whilst the Russell 2000 Growth Index rose 25.7% in Q2, driven by AI enthusiasm and semiconductor stocks. However, the Conestoga SMid Cap Composite returned just 7.04% net, underperforming the Russell 2500 Growth Index's 24.02% return. The firm cited factor and sector-specific headwinds, along with stock selection challenges in Technology and Industrials. Rollins detracted from portfolio performance during the quarter. The pest control company faced investor concerns following its CFO's departure and organic revenue growth trailing long-term targets. Despite share price weakness, Conestoga maintains its view of Rollins as a high-quality business with durable competitive advantages.

Law firm Kirby McInerney LLP is investigating potential securities fraud claims against Rollins, Inc. (NYSE: ROL). CEO Jerry Gahlhoff attributed the disappointing results to a deteriorating lead environment, noting fewer people were searching for pest control services through digital channels. Following the announcement, Rollins's share price fell $4.03, or 9.27%, closing at $39.44 on 23 July 2026. No lawsuit has been filed yet.
