Fri 06/19/2026 - 13:00 SOCOTEC UK & Ireland proudly sponsored the UK & Ireland Spill Association's 'Turf and Surf' Conference for inland and marine spills between 16th-17th June 2026. The Turf and Surf conference brought together experts from a variety of sectors impacted by spills, including, regulators, manufacturers, and response professionals to discuss remediation strategies, spill response, and the future of environmental spill management. Day one focused on inland spills, and day two on marine spills - the event provided the opportunity for knowledge and research into the various technologies and methods used to prevent and respond to spills to be shared between peers. SOCOTEC is proud to be the silver sponsor of this conference. These events stimulate collaboration and lively debates, allowing SOCOTEC Group to come together and collaborate to fix the ongoing environmental issue of spills. Operations and Commercial Director at SOCOTEC UK & Ireland, Tim Barnes With PFAS contributing to spills as a contaminant, Geraint Pumford, Technical Specialist at SOCOTEC UK & Ireland, gave a presentation about PFAS sampling and analysis, discussing the analytical aspect of PFAS remediation and spills. Geraint also featured on the PFAS panel, co-chaired by Amy Parekh-Pross, Chemistry Project Manager and Technical Associate at SOCOTEC UK & Ireland and chair of the PFAS working group. The panel discussed PFAS analysis, remediation strategies, and regulatory guidance, with insights from experts in PFAS remediation technologies. It was a privilege to have Paul Nathanail, leading PFAS expert, involved with the conference. He opened the PFAS panel and wrapped up the session with valuable insights into issues regarding PFAS regulation and remediation. Paul stressed the importance of 'following the science' when addressing PFAS challenges - a message that resonated strongly with all attendees. SOCOTEC Group see a lot of progress in Europe regarding PFAS guidelines, it's important that SOCOTEC Group focus on achievable outcomes for PFAS remediation and response. Thu 06/18/2026 - 11:52 SOCOTEC UK & Ireland is celebrating a double award win at this year's Ground Engineering Awards, as part of an industry-leading partnership that was recognised for both Technical Excellence and Sustainability. The collaborative team of SOCOTEC, GEARS Ltd, Tarmac, and BAM Ground Engineering, received the two prestigious awards for their combined work on the Ravelrig Quarry blasting impact assessment, engagement, and mitigation project. - Technical Excellence Award - Assessment and mitigation of blasting effects to secure consent for the extension to Ravelrig Quarry - Sustainability Award - Ravelrig Quarry blasting impact assessment, engagement and mitigation Working across several Tarmac quarry sites, the team developed enhanced quarry blast models and management strategies. This demonstrated significant improvements over industry standards that had remained largely unchanged for several decade, reflecting a desire to improve the wider industry through the work. Supported by specialist monitoring expertise from Instantel, the project enabled better prediction and management of blasting impacts, while using an evidence-led approach to strengthen community engagement and confidence through transparency. Judges praised the project's innovative approach, highlighting the use of artificial intelligence to transform quarry blasting assessment, delivering substantial carbon reduction benefits while addressing longstanding community concerns. The team was also recognised for their knowledge sharing, including convening an industry conference to disseminate findings, influence national policy and establish a new benchmark for the UK quarrying sector. Commenting on the achievement, the project team said: "This is a fantastic recognition of what can be achieved through collaboration. Bringing together expertise from across GEARS, Tarmac, BAM Ground Engineering, SOCOTEC, Instantel and the wider project team has enabled us to develop and prove new approaches that deliver operational, environmental and social benefits. Having successfully demonstrated these improvements in practice, we are now looking forward to continuing the development and wider roll-out of the methodology across the industry." The awards recognise not only the technical innovation behind the project, but also the wider sustainability benefits, reflecting clear social, policy, and operational improvements and a shared commitment to continuous improvement and industry-wide learning. Testing firm expands with 'milestone' acquisition. A testing, inspection and certification services firm has expanded with a takeover. SOCOTEC UK & Ireland has bought LSTC Group. Bosses say the move has bolstered the company's engineering and asset inspection services offer. They add the "significant milestone" deal will enable Burton-upon-Trent-headquartered SOCOTEC UK & Ireland to "reach a new level of scale and capability in the power transmission and distribution sector". Working from offices on either side of the Irish Sea, SOCOTEC UK & Ireland provides services across sectors including construction, energy, facilities management and rail. Founded in 1954, LSTC - headquartered in Driffield, East Yorkshire - supports transmission owners, distribution network operators, independent connection providers and project developers across the energy infrastructure sector. Its portfolio includes overhead line design and CAD services, geotechnical assessments and asset inspection work. Fri 04/24/2026 - 15:21 Experts from across the UK gathered at the 'PFAS: A Forever Problem?' conference on 22nd April 2026, sponsored by SOCOTEC UK & Ireland, alongside ATG Group and Puragen. Held at the National Brownfield Institute at the University of Wolverhampton, the conference consisted of multiple interesting talks and presentations throughout the day by various individuals and organisations collectively invested in the future of PFAS remediation technologies and testing capabilities, followed by interactive panels. Attendees included those working in academia researching PFAS, MPs working with the government regarding PFAS regulations, and organisations producing new PFAS remediation technologies.
