The Syracuse-based not-for-profit defence research company will provide advanced airborne sensing capability designed to detect and track long-range missile threats for the Air Force's Mobility Air Force and other high-value aircraft. SRC received an order from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) for two AN/TPQ-49A radar systems configured with air-surveillance software for use in a ground-based sense-and-avoid (GBSAA) system supporting uncrewed aircraft testing, the company announced in a statement. The radars will be deployed at GA-ASI flight-operations sites in El Mirage and Gray Butte, California, to detect and track cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft operating near uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) test areas. Delivery is expected by the end of October 2026, according to the statement. The ground-based sensors are intended to provide airspace awareness for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) UAS operations without requiring an airborne radar on the uncrewed aircraft.
