India picks local startup Sarvam to build military AI.

India picks local startup Sarvam to build military AI. The Ministry of Defence has signed a five-year agreement with homegrown startup Sarvam AI. This major partnership marks a massive step forward in india's goal to modernise its national security using independent, homegrown technology. Under this deal, the company will create and deploy artificial intelligence applications across the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force to make operations faster, safer and smarter. India is building a single, connected "AI Brain" for all three military branches instead of buying separate, isolated software for each force. This shared network means a smart tool built for an Army tank can instantly share its tech lessons with a Navy ship or an Air Force fighter jet. Working as one unit, the technology will merge data from different radars and sensors to give commanders a crystal-clear picture of the battlefield. It will also upgrade daily military training and help troops spot targets with much higher precision. Sarvam AI will run these advanced applications through a highly secure, private national security division called Chanakya, using its custom Sarvam 105B model. Safety and self-reliance are the most important goals of this deal. By using a local Indian startup and running the software entirely on sovereign Indian infrastructure, the military ensures that its sensitive data never leaks outside the country. Furthermore, the government has made it clear that while this modern AI will help soldiers make quicker decisions, humans will always keep total, final control over all battlefield actions. Sarvam AI signs a five-year MoU with HQ IDS Indian AI company Sarvam has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) to develop artificial intelligence applications for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The agreement establishes a common framework for AI projects across the three services and other joint defence organisations. On October 26, HQ IDS announced an agreement that was later made public by Sarvam on Tuesday. This agreement was in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding, or MoU, which was signed with HQ IDS - an organization that falls under the Ministry of Defence. It's worth noting that the company took care to clarify that the MoU was signed with HQ IDS, and not directly with the Ministry of Defence itself. Under the agreement, Sarvam will develop and deploy AI applications for military operations, training and decision-making. The company will also provide technical support after deployment, while HQ IDS will coordinate the work across the three services.

Sarvam to build AI framework for India's armed forces.

Sarvam to build AI framework for India's armed forces. Indian AI company Sarvam has signed an agreement with Headquarters Integrated Defense Staff to develop AI applications for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The initiative will focus on operational support, training and decision-making using Indian technology and secure infrastructure. 27 Oct 2026 20:30 IST Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI tools for operational tasks, military training and decision support. The agreement covers projects across all three services, with HQ IDS coordinating the work. The framework will give the Army, Navy and Air Force access to shared AI models, systems that can perform tasks with limited assistance, and tools for analysing geographic data and visual information. The planned applications include decision support, target identification and combining information from multiple sensors. Human oversight will be maintained over operational decisions, according to the report. The initiative supports India's push to build defense technology domestically. Sarvam and HQ IDS intend to develop the AI systems using Indian technology, data and computing resources, with deployment on infrastructure under Indian control. Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of Sarvam, said: "Sarvam exists to build AI in India, for India. The core of that mission is to put the country's own intelligence into the systems it depends on. To work with the three services on the nation's defense is an honour and a privilege," The company will carry out the defense work through Chanakya, its dedicated division for national security and defense. The division will use Sarvam's AI technology stack, including its Sarvam 105B foundation model. The agreement also covers plans to develop an AI framework connecting different parts of India's defense capabilities. The projects will span the three services and organisations operating under HQ IDS. The initiative places AI development within India's broader effort to strengthen domestic defense capabilities. Its focus is on building systems that can support military operations while keeping the underlying technology and infrastructure within the country.

The agreement establishes an umbrella framework for AI projects spanning the three Services as well as joint, tri-service and integrated organisations under HQ IDS. Under the MoU, Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI solutions for operational, training and decision-support requirements, and provide ongoing technical support. Focus on Sovereign and Secure AI HQ IDS stated that the partnership will concentrate on building secure, sovereign and scalable AI capabilities, with strong emphasis on data sovereignty and responsible AI-based solutions. The framework will give the three Services and joint organisations access to common foundation models, agentic infrastructure, and geospatial and perception systems. This shared technology layer is intended to allow lessons and capabilities developed for one Service to inform projects in the others. Key application areas include decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop. Human oversight will be retained on operational decisions. The AI systems are to be built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure. Role of Chanakya Division The projects will be executed through Chanakya, Sarvam's firewalled division dedicated to national security and defence work. The division will utilise the company's AI stack, including foundation models such as Sarvam 105B. Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar noted that the partnership aligns with the company's mission of building AI in India for India. The MoU advances the Ministry of Defence's push to develop indigenous military AI capabilities in collaboration with Indian technology partners.
