AI-Native SAFe: Scaled Agile introduces governance for the AI era. Scaled Agile, Inc., the company behind SAFe(R), the widely adopted framework for scaling Lean and Agile practices, has introduced AI-Native SAFe(R). The new release evolves the SAFe Framework into an AI-focused operating model designed to help organizations realize greater value from AI investments while maintaining effective Lean-Agile governance in the age of artificial intelligence. SAFe has become the operating model of choice for more than 20,000 enterprises and government agencies and over 2 million practitioners navigating the complexities of product and service development. AI has now expanded the challenge well beyond product teams, reshaping how work gets done across entire organizations. That expanded scope demands a governed, structured operating model designed to make AI work at enterprise scale. Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence Rather than merely layering AI capabilities onto the existing Framework, Scaled Agile has released a new version of SAFe - AI-Native SAFe - to sit alongside the existing Core SAFe Operating Model. The new version integrates the specific practices and governance required in the AI era, resulting in a model that is recognizable to existing SAFe users yet fundamentally enhanced to meet the unique challenges of becoming an AI-native enterprise. "The bottleneck has moved," said Andrew Sales, chief methodologist, Scaled Agile. "The challenge for organizations is no longer whether they can build something in the time available. Rather, it is keeping up with the need to validate whether what they are building is safe, secure, and valuable. AI-Native SAFe enables enterprises to incorporate AI into Lean and Agile practices, puts outcomes at the center of everything, and gives enterprises governance, structure, and proven methods to make sure faster also means better." What Changes in AI-Native SAFe To create AI-Native SAFe, Scaled Agile worked closely with customers, partners, and thought leaders to harness proven AI patterns. As a result, AI-Native SAFe effectively supports organizations on their journey to achieving the maximum return from their AI investments. AI-Native SAFe introduces significant changes to how teams are formed, roles are defined, how work flows, and how AI is woven into delivery. Teams are smaller and AI-augmented; work cycles are shorter and more iterative; and handoffs between humans and AI are explicitly designed into the model rather than left to individual interpretation. AI-Native SAFe identifies a dedicated "AI value architect" role responsible for guiding teams toward outcomes while navigating cost, ethics, legal, and risk considerations. Governance and ethics, specifications and intent, and curated data management are now surface-level elements of the Framework. AI-Native SAFe is designed to give large organizations, including those with complex regulatory, legal, and data obligations, the structure to harness AI's productivity gains without losing control of the outcomes those gains are meant to serve. A Clear Path for Organizations Already Using SAFe Alongside the release of AI-Native SAFe, Digital IT News is making another important commitment: its commitment to continue supporting and evolving the Core SAFe operating model. Core SAFe remains the foundation for successful enterprise agility. The principles, practices, and governance that have helped more than 20,000 organizations improve alignment, execution, and value delivery remain as relevant as ever. For many enterprises, Core SAFe continues to provide the right operating model for their current needs. AI-Native SAFe builds on that foundation, extending proven Lean-Agile practices with the new capabilities, governance, and operating patterns required to harness AI at scale. For organizations already succeeding with SAFe, AI-Native SAFe provides a natural path to evolve - not replace - the systems, investments and ways of working they have already established. On June 16, Scaled Agile unveiled the AI-Native SAFe Big Picture through a new webinar series. Across six sessions, held every two weeks, the company will progressively reveal how the operating model transforms teams, Agile Release Trains, and portfolios, building toward SAFe Summit San Diego on September 14-18, where the complete vision comes together through deeper learning, practical application, and real-world customer experiences.
Scaled Agile has released AI-Native SAFe, a new version of its enterprise framework designed to provide governance for organisations implementing AI at scale. The framework sits alongside the existing Core SAFe Operating Model and integrates specific practices for AI-era challenges. AI-Native SAFe introduces smaller, AI-augmented teams, shorter work cycles and a dedicated "AI value architect" role to navigate cost, ethics and risk considerations. Governance, ethics and curated data management are now core elements of the framework. The company will continue supporting Core SAFe, which serves more than 20,000 enterprises and 2 million practitioners globally. AI-Native SAFe extends these proven Lean-Agile practices with new capabilities for harnessing AI at enterprise scale. Scaled Agile unveiled the framework through a webinar series beginning 16 June, with full details planned for SAFe Summit San Diego in September.
SAFe Summit keynote recap: architecting for the Future. On the 24th of March 2026, live from the SAFe Summit in Amsterdam, Andrew Sales, Chief Methodologist of SAFe, took to the main stage to address the defining challenge of its time: In an era of accelerating technology and unpredictable AI advancement, how do Interval Advisors architect success for a future that is rapidly changing? Andrew's keynote, "Architecting for the Future," proposed that because the future is inherently unpredictable, the "Transformation" model of the last decade - characterized by big-bang, stop-and-start reorganizations - is no longer sufficient. To succeed in an "Edge" world, we must move away from the "transformation treadmill" and build organizations that are inherently adaptive. "When that ecosystem is healthy - evidenced by the organization's ability to constantly sense shifts, prune unproductive activities, and nurture new growth avenues - transformations are rarely needed, and when they do occur, they are more productive." - Harvard Business Review, Get Off the Transformation Treadmill 1. Build an Adaptive Operating Model. For years, Interval Advisors viewed SAFe primarily as a means of transformation. Interval Advisors would stop, reorganize, and restart. But in the age of AI, change is the only constant. Interval Advisors need an Adaptive Operating Model that enables the organization to constantly sense and respond to market shifts. To support this, Andrew revealed a brand-new view of the Leadership and Culture discipline. This update focuses on how leaders at all levels use SAFe to move beyond a "once-and-done" implementation. It's about a continual practice of adaptation, ensuring you are always addressing your biggest business challenges. The journey still begins with training and launching trains, followed by Customizing SAFe to your specific context. But the third, most critical step is the adaptive piece. By organizing the Framework around modular Business Problems, Interval Advisors allow organizations to build SAFe Competency Journey Maps that overcome the hurdles they face today. Announced from the stage for the first time: * Solving Business Problems Article: New guidance providing a repeatable process for identifying your biggest business problems and building an adaptable operating model. * Competency Cards: Printable cards that link specific business problems to the SAFe Competencies that address them, creating an interactive approach to building SAFe Competency Journey Maps. 2. Unlock real returns with AI. Why do the possibilities of AI seem endless, yet only 9% of companies achieve value at scale? Andrew argued that most organizations are working backward - starting with the technology and hunting for a problem to solve. "Only 9% of companies are achieving AI value at scale" - Return on AI Institute, Economic Maturity of Artificial Intelligence 2026 To unlock real returns, organizations must start with a conversation about value. Andrew introduced five proven AI value patterns that serve as the "North Star" for navigating the noise: * Knowledge and Decision Support * Customer Interaction * Workforce Automation * Risk and Control * Expert Productivity To help you lead this shift, Interval Advisors is thrilled to announce the release of the new executive guide: "5 Value Patterns that Separate AI Natives from AI Tourists." Interval Advisors also unveiled the 1-Day Leading an AI-Native Organization Course, covering everything from AI strategy and vision to the critical enabling capabilities of data and ethics. 3. Achieve AI-Empowered Agility. The final piece of the architecture is AI-Empowered Agility. This isn't a replacement for Lean-Agile; it is an evolution that builds upon it. It involves two parts: how Interval Advisors work to develop AI solutions, and how Interval Advisors leverage AI to enhance the speed, quality, and adaptability of SAFe itself. Andrew detailed four critical shifts that amplify SAFe for the AI age: * Focus on Outcomes & Intent: Using "Intent" to identify the core purpose behind AI-driven systems. * Iterative Learning & Rapid Experimentation: Accelerating the PDCA cycle through AI-driven insights. * Development & Innovation at Scale: Moving beyond just "development" to democratized, governed innovation across the enterprise. * Cross-Functional, AI-Augmented Teams: Reimagining teams where AI is a core contributor, not just a tool. All of this is underpinned by a Human-Centric AI Culture - using human judgment to govern and manage while utilizing AI to improve productivity and creativity. The Big Reveal: A New Surface on the Big Picture In a significant update to the Framework, Andrew unveiled that AI-Empowered Agility is now a dedicated surface area on the SAFe Big Picture. SAFe customers can now click directly on this section to immediately access integrated guidance, including links to the new AI-Empowered SAFe Certification courses, skills, and workshop. Interval Advisors is moving into an era where SAFe doesn't just help you manage work - it helps you architect a future that is ready for anything. Interval Advisors can't wait to see how you use these new building blocks to make your organization truly adaptive. - The Framework Team
