What believers are saying

  • On June 4, 2026, Scotch raised $20 million from VMG Partners and existing backers.
  • Scotch reported 500% year-over-year growth and surpassed $1 billion annual payment volume.
  • Capital targets engineering, sales, and product expansion across independent and large-format liquor retailers.

What critics are saying

  • Liquor retail software remains fragmented; Square, Toast, and legacy POS vendors retain installed bases.
  • Scotch's $1 billion payment volume still trails distribution-scale incumbents across 40,000+ independent stores.
  • If merchants resist payments lock-in, Scotch's software and take-rate bundling weakens by 2027.

What makes Scotch unique

  • Scotch is liquor-only software, replacing generic POS, back-office, payments, and e-commerce tools.
  • Jake Bolling and Kevin Hodges built Skupos; Dan Chen came from Drizly and Uber.
  • Scotch automates 10,000-25,000-SKU ordering with AI inventory recommendations and compliance tools.

Scotch raises $20M Series A to modernise liquor retail with AI-powered operating system

Scotch, an AI-native operating system for liquor retailers, has raised $20 million in a Series A round led by VMG Partners, with participation from First Round Capital, Lerer Hippeau and Toba Capital. The Denver-based startup reports over 500% year-over-year growth and has surpassed $1 billion in processed payment volume. Founded in January 2024 by former Skupos executives, Scotch provides an all-in-one software ecosystem including point-of-sale hardware, payment processing and back-office management for the $250 billion beverage alcohol market. The platform uses AI to automate inventory management and vendor ordering across products ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 items per store. The company generates revenue through SaaS fees, interchange fees on payments and hardware sales. Scotch has 45 employees and plans to expand engineering and sales operations.
