Audi wants A luxury off-roader - If it makes sense. Audi weighs entry into luxury off-roader market - but only if the numbers add up. The first-generation Amarok continues to soldier on in Latin America, but VW has shown no interest in transforming it into a luxury off-roader. Meanwhile, the second-generation model, which debuted as a heavily reworked version of the Ford Ranger, seems equally unlikely to evolve into a rugged SUV contender. However, the Volkswagen Group is not shutting the door on the idea entirely. In a recent interview with Australian publication Carsales, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner revealed that the Ingolstadt-based brand is open to developing a true 4x4 - provided certain conditions are met. The executive stressed that any such project must make financial sense, effectively ruling out the costly development of a brand-new platform from scratch. "No decision has been taken yet... but it is definitely in the framework that we are thinking about. You need a platform that is authentic in this segment, otherwise it does not make sense." A platform puzzle: could Scout Motors provide the answer? The most logical path forward for Audi would be to tap into the Volkswagen Group's extensive parts bin. Specifically, the newly revived Scout Motors brand - which is developing its own body-on-frame architecture for the upcoming Terra pickup and Traveler SUV - could serve as the foundation for a luxury Audi off-roader. Scout's vehicles are slated to enter production next year as electric models, with an optional range-extending gasoline engine. Döllner's comments suggest that Audi is serious about entering the rugged luxury SUV segment, but the timeline remains uncertain. Even if the project receives the green light, a production model is unlikely to appear before the end of the decade - perhaps around 2030. The CEO's cautious approach reflects the broader challenges facing automakers as they navigate the transition to electrification while managing development costs. Last year, Audi offered a glimpse of its off-road ambitions with the Q6 E-Tron Offroad concept, a vehicle equipped with portal axles and based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). While that concept demonstrated Audi's interest in the segment, Döllner made it clear that a production version would require a ladder-frame chassis - a more traditional and robust foundation for serious off-road capability. The growing allure of the rugged SUV segment. The idea of an Audi off-roader may strike some purists as unconventional, but Döllner sees it differently. "The positive about the Audi brand is that almost every segment is thinkable," he said. Given that Quattro all-wheel drive has been a cornerstone of Audi's identity for decades, a high-riding model capable of tackling rough terrain is hardly a stretch. The luxury off-road segment has exploded in recent years, with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender enjoying strong sales and commanding premium prices. Even BMW is reportedly developing a rugged SUV, expected to debut near the end of the decade. For Audi, entering this space would not only fill a glaring gap in its lineup but also capitalize on the growing consumer appetite for vehicles that blend luxury with genuine off-road capability. An Audi-badged off-roader would almost certainly carry a price tag significantly higher than the Scout Traveler, which is expected to start under $60,000. That premium positioning would align with Audi's status as a luxury brand and allow it to compete directly with the G-Class and Defender. Other priorities: Q9 and next-generation Q7. For now, Audi has its hands full with other SUV projects. Later this year, the brand will finally take on the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS with the introduction of the Q9, a true three-row SUV that dealers have described as the "soccer mom vehicle" the lineup desperately needs. Additionally, a next-generation Q7 is locked in for a 2026 debut. These launches underscore Audi's commitment to expanding its SUV portfolio, but they also highlight the challenges of juggling multiple projects simultaneously. Developing a rugged off-roader from an existing platform - whether from Scout or another source - would require significant investment and engineering resources. Motor1's take: A logical move, but still a long shot. The Volkswagen Group desperately needs a proper off-roader, and the revival of Scout Motors cannot come soon enough. A more luxurious option wearing the Audi badge - picking up where the first-generation Porsche Cayenne left off - makes perfect sense, given how the rugged SUV niche has exploded in recent years. Still, the project appears to be in its infancy and may not happen at all. If Scout's rebirth proves successful, the VW Group could be encouraged to elevate the formula with a luxury offering from Audi. For now, though, enthusiasts will have to wait and see whether Döllner's cautious optimism translates into a production-ready off-roader capable of taking on the G-Class and Defender on their own turf.

Now, as EV sales face a period of uncertainty and American buyers show an increasing appetite for hybrid cars, the company is reconsidering its strategy. In a few years, a VW Tiguan Hybrid and a VW Atlas Hybrid will be available at U.S. dealers. Volkswagen intends to launch new hybrid cars in North America as soon as possible, global CEO Thomas Schäfer told journalists at the 2024 LA Auto Show, as per an Edmunds report dated November 21, 2024. The company wants to initially offer a hybrid powertrain in two of its most popular SUVs, the Tiguan and Atlas. VW Tiguan Hybrid for the U.S. Without divulging the type of hybrid technology, Schäfer said that launching a Tiguan Hybrid in the U.S. is "part of the plan." The new Tiguan arriving in the U.S. in 2025 is adapted from the second-generation Tayron for Europe. There, it comes with both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems. However, it looks like neither of these systems is being considered for the United States. Dr Kjell Gruner, President & CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, is reported by Automotive News as preferring full-hybrids for this market for cost and weight reasons. This is a system comparable to what's found in the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 hybrid, and cannot be charged externally. Volkswagen has announced its next-generation full-hybrid system, which will debut in the VW T-Roc next year in Europe. It uses a 1.5-litre system that generates 100 kW (134 hp) and 125 kW (168 hp) depending on the configuration, with a front-wheel drive layout. It is likely that Volkswagen is eyeing this full-hybrid system for the U.S. market Tiguan. VW Atlas Hybrid for the U.S. As for the type of powertrain for the Atlas Hybrid, Top Electric SUV is expecting a similar full-hybrid system, but it would have to be powerful and torquey to suit the demands of this segment. Volkswagen doesn't have a hybrid powertrain in its current arsenal for the Atlas's size class, so it may have to develop one. Scout Motors is working on an EREV powertrain for the Terra and Traveler models, with the first units scheduled for 2027. The system reportedly uses a four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine and an LFP battery pack, where the engine solely charges the battery. The Traveler and Terra have been refreshed to show how each vehicle serves different customer needs.
