iMerit, Segmed and Advocate Health have released the largest open-source annotated breast tomosynthesis dataset to accelerate AI research in breast cancer detection. The dataset includes imaging studies from 558 female patients, with a balanced distribution of 271 malignant and 287 benign cases, all biopsy confirmed and interpreted by US Board Certified radiologists. The dataset focuses on early detection, with an average tumour size of 1.34cm and approximately 85% of lesions smaller than 2cm. Images use digital breast tomosynthesis and are provided in DICOM format with JSON annotations, fully de-identified under HIPAA and GDPR standards. The release aims to support development of AI tools for radiologists, addressing a critical need as an estimated 321,910 US women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2026.
