Sekai

Generative AI-powered platform for interactive storytelling

Overview

Sekai is a generative AI-powered social entertainment platform that lets users create, share, and experience interactive anime-style stories. Users design characters, generate AI-driven narratives, and roleplay as different personas, with features like voice cloning and image-to-avatar conversion built into a social sharing experience. The app uses a free-to-use model with minimal ads and may add premium enterprise services such as analytics later. Backed by firms like a16z, Mayfield, and A*, with founders who previously worked on TikTok, its goal is to grow a user-centric community around AI-assisted storytelling.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Axios reported June 1, 2026: Sekai raised $20 million Series A.
  • Users created over 15 million mini-apps and exceed 200,000 daily generations.
  • Google Play updated July 15, 2026, showing 1,000,000-plus installs and hour-plus daily engagement.

What critics are saying

  • Google AI Studio, Bolt.new, and Lovable compress Sekai's builder differentiation inside months.
  • The app stores and platform policies control distribution, monetization, and ranking for Sekai.
  • If prompt-built mini-apps plateau after novelty, Sekai becomes another feature inside TikTok or Roblox.

What makes Sekai unique

  • Sekai turned anime fanfiction into prompt-built mini-apps, creating social software as content.
  • Lucky Zhang and Arthur Cheung bring Apple, TikTok, and ByteDance distribution instincts.
  • Sekai's remixable, one-minute experiences prioritize virality, not utility, unlike conventional app builders.
