Select Star provides a data discovery and governance platform for businesses to define a single source of truth and manage data consistently. It works through a centralized interface that helps locate data assets, map current data models, show who uses which data, and identify changes needed for remodeling or classification. The platform differentiates itself by reducing data-analyst onboarding time and maintaining a reliable, consistent data foundation across both vendor ecosystems and open-source solutions. Its goal is to help organizations understand and govern their data efficiently, speeding up analysis and improving data quality.

Snowflake has announced its acquisition of Select Star, a metadata governance platform, to enhance its AI data intelligence capabilities. The acquisition, announced in November 2025, will integrate Select Star's technology and team, including CEO Shinji Kim, into Snowflake's Horizon Catalog. This move aims to unify enterprise data governance and improve AI reliability by embedding Select Star’s automated metadata mapping into Snowflake's ecosystem.
Snowflake to acquire Select Star to expand Horizon Catalog's view of enterprise data for next-gen AI. Today's leading enterprises have Snowflake at the center of their data estate. But the full context of their valuable data assets - including where they came from and how they're being used - is scattered across upstream and downstream systems like databases, BI platforms and orchestration tools. This fragmentation makes it difficult to discover the right data asset and understand the full context around it. Now, in the age of AI, this limited context is a problem not only for humans, but also for agents. Enter Snowflake Horizon Catalog, which provides unified context and governance for AI over all data. At Snowflake Summit 2025, Snowflake shared how Snowflake is extending Horizon Catalog capabilities like search and lineage to data and AI assets that exist in systems outside of Snowflake. To accelerate that vision, Snowflake is thrilled to announce that Snowflake has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Select Star team and platform technology. Select Star's integrations with database systems like PostgreSQL and MySQL, business intelligence tools like Tableau and Power BI, and data pipeline/orchestration tools like dbt and Airflow will help Snowflake expand Horizon Catalog's view of an enterprise's data estate. This broader context will help agentic AI experiences like Snowflake Intelligence and Cortex Code deeply understand an enterprise's data and how to extract insight from it. Its shared commitment to helping users discover, understand and gain insight from data using AI makes the Select Star technology a natural fit for Horizon Catalog. The Select Star team, which includes founder and CEO Shinji Kim, will play a key role in driving its next phase of innovation. Founded in 2020, Select Star's metadata context platform integrates a wide range of data sources into a unified model that powers data lineage, impact analysis and data discovery at scale. The Select Star technology brings clarity to complex environments and delivers the trusted context needed for AI, analytics and effective data governance. Snowflake is thrilled to welcome the Select Star team to Snowflake, where their expertise will help Snowflake advance its mission to empower every enterprise to achieve its full potential through data and AI.
