Abstract data to life-saving care: making technology innovation count for every child. 18 March 2026 By Stephen Taylor, Chief Delivery and Impact Officer, Simprints I spent 15 years working across some of the world's most protracted and challenging conflicts. It was an immense professional privilege, and I still feel a deep sense of solidarity with those delivering frontline humanitarian support to the people most in need. The reason I joined Simprints and why I remain so excited by the mission, is that Simprints Technology Ltd is striving to use technology to help its partners build better visibility and integrity around exactly what services were received, by whom, and when. I'm a firm believer that appropriately applied technology can help ensure even greater transparency for its impact. It's not a silver bullet; I know so many inspiring MEAL practitioners who work tirelessly to set up truly robust manual monitoring systems. However, technology can help, ensuring Simprints Technology Ltd know, with as much confidence as possible, which individual received what service, and where. Visibility where it matters most. At the heart of its approach is a simple goal; helping partners improve patient identification. By establishing this foundation of verified individual data, Simprints Technology Ltd provide the quality and confidence required to move beyond estimates toward more accountable, informed services. To date, Simprints Technology Ltd has supported partners in reaching 4.4 million people, with its large-scale programmes grounded in an accurate and transparent understanding of the populations they serve. Now, Simprints Technology Ltd is working to ensure that no child misses out on critical support from birth. Through the development of world-first, AI-driven biometrics, Simprints Technology Ltd is creating technology specifically designed for infants. Powered by Arm's power-efficient compute platform, its tool leverages on-device AI, allowing health workers to capture high-quality biometric markers, such as the face, ears, or feet, on their phone. Meanwhile, AI-driven algorithms project growth patterns to create a digital health ID that 'grows' with the child. This ensures that life-saving interventions, such as the four-dose malaria vaccine, can reach the right child at the right time, every time. Refining tools for the frontline. During a recent trip to Ghana with its partners Arm and Gavi, Simprints Technology Ltd saw how true data visibility is only possible when technology is built for the reality of the clinic. If a tool doesn't work seamlessly for a frontline health worker, the data simply won't exist. By focusing on these operational realities, Simprints Technology Ltd ensure its tools are practical for everyday use, because when Simprints Technology Ltd make technology intuitive for the frontline, Simprints Technology Ltd secure the verified, individual data that creates system-wide accountability. You can see this in action in Arm's new video from Ghana: One nurse I spoke with described the frustration of searching paper records for a patient's history, a time-consuming process that takes away from service delivery. She explained that with the digital patient identification approach, she no longer has to wonder if she is looking at the correct record among hundreds of similar names. The tool has turned a lengthy manual search into a three-second verification, giving her the confidence that the data she records is accurate and tied to the right child, every time. Market day in Ghana. "I remember watching a mother arrive at an outreach vaccination campaign on a busy market day, clearly pressed for time. Her primary concern was the queue; she was juggling her child's health with the need to get back to her stall, and she simply couldn't afford to sit for hours while so many children were treated. The digital approach helped change that. By moving away from manual patient lookups, the process was fast enough to get her back to her day without delay. There was also a secondary sense of relief regarding her child's health booklet; she mentioned how much she worries about losing it, knowing it would be nearly impossible to remember exactly which vaccinations her child had already received. Watching this process in a rural clinic is a powerful experience. When a health worker scans a baby's feet or ears, they are completing a medical record that ensures a child is not lost to the system. It provides the worker with immediate clarity on exactly what is needed next for that child, ensuring continuity of care even if the physical booklet is eventually lost." Scaling access to care. Globally, at least half of the world's population lacks access to essential health services, and millions die each year from preventable diseases. This tragedy is driven by a critical failure: life-saving innovations aren't reaching the people who need them most. At its heart, its work is about the simple but profound goal of making sure more people get the essential health services they need. By using its biometric technology, Simprints Technology Ltd is able to build an accurate map of coverage, showing Simprints Technology Ltd exactly who has received what and when. This kind of verified, quality data is the backbone of real impact. When Simprints Technology Ltd increase coverage, Simprints Technology Ltd is not just improving statistics, Simprints Technology Ltd is ensuring more people access the vaccinations they need. This leads to healthier lives, improved livelihoods, and countless cases of disease and illness averted.
Operation Sight wins SDG Programme of the Year award. Simprints Technology Ltd is thrilled to announce that Operation Sight has been awarded the SDG Programme of the Year at the Development 2030 Awards. This prestigious recognition celebrates innovative, high-impact initiatives that advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the Global South. Its partnership with Orbis International, CIFF, and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health was recognised for its transformative work verifying trachoma trichiasis (TT) surgeries and strengthening data integrity at scale. Valentin Courtay, Operation Sight Project Manager at Simprints, receives the prestigious award at Aidex 2025. Transforming eye care. * Operation Sight has achieved remarkable success in Ethiopia, significantly reducing the trachoma trichiasis (TT) surgery backlog. * By integrating robust fingerprint and contactless face biometrics, the programme has accurately identified, tracked, and followed up with over 48,000 patients, ensuring traceability and accountability for 85% of all digitally recorded surgeries. * This pioneering approach has not only enhanced accuracy and efficiency in frontline service delivery - making patient identification up to eight times faster than manual methods - but it has also fostered greater patient trust and acceptance, with a 92% acceptance rate for face biometrics in pilot areas. Alexandra Grigore, Simprints' Chief Strategy Officer, reflected on the collaboration: "The Operation Sight project is special because of the commitment and hard work being undertaken, not just by Simprints, but by all its partners - Orbis International and the Ethiopia team, the Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Fred Hollows Foundation, and the Carter Centre. This award is shared by Simprints Technology Ltd all together - Simprints Technology Ltd is proud to partner with you. I also want to give thanks to the often unsung heroes - the integrated eye care workers. They perform sight-saving surgeries for communities day in and day out. Their skill, drive, commitment, and openness to embracing a new technology to aid their work is so admirable - Simprints Technology Ltd dedicate this award to them." As Operation Sight continues through 2025, this award affirms what collaboration and innovation can achieve. Together, Orbis, Simprints, and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health are showing the world how technology can unlock new pathways to improved sight care - and help bring Simprints Technology Ltd closer to a future free from avoidable blindness.
Simprints launches new Randomised Control Trial in Ghana. Simprints Technology Ltd is launching an impact evaluation in the Oti region of Ghana to understand the impact of Simprints technology on vaccination coverage. In partnership with the Ghana Health Service, the research is led by Dr. Jessica Cohen from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Dr. Elisa Maffioli from University of Michigan School of Public Health and Prof. Chris Guure from the University of Ghana School of Public Health. The project is funded by GDI Solutions and the Weiss Fund. A first in Ghana: investigating the impact of infant biometrics for vaccine delivery. This new Randomised Control Trial (RCT) will test its hypothesis that biometrically verifying vaccine delivery will generate more accurate, reliable, real-time individual-level data on children who've defaulted or missed a vaccine dose. This data can be utilised through targeted voice message reminders and by health workers to identify and follow up with defaulters, thereby increasing coverage of malaria and other routine immunisations. Principal Investigator Dr Elisa Maffioli (far left) and Research Associate Gustavo Acosta Matos (far right) from University of Michigan School of Public Health join the University of Ghana team to interview caregivers at a vaccination clinic in Ghana. Using ai-driven technology to strengthen the local health system. Simprints has been working in Ghana since 2020, piloting and developing technology to strengthen the digital health system of the Ghana Health Service. This year, Simprints technology will reach 586 facilities across the Eastern and Oti regions. Over the last two years, Simprints has transitioned from using caregiver fingerprints as a proxy measure for identifying and verifying the delivery of vaccines and other maternal and child health services, to using face recognition technology specially designed for infants, to verify the delivery of vaccines to children as young as six months. A baby has her face scanned with the SimprintsID mobile app, so the health worker can locate her digital health record at a clinic in Ghana. Its theory of change for this trial centres on two parallel strategies, both relying on accurate data generated through a biometric-enabled digital health information system. First, Simprints Technology Ltd is equipping health workers with real-time, accurate lists of children who are overdue for malaria and other life-saving vaccines. This information saves them precious time and helps them quickly and effectively reach the children who've missed their appointments. Second, interactive voice reminders (IVR), linked to data in the digital system, are sent directly to caregivers, whenever their child is due or overdue for a vaccine, encouraging them to visit the clinic. Dr Elisa Maffoli, Associate Professor at University of Michigan, commented: "It's a privilege to partner with Simprints as Simprints Technology Ltd launch this important study. By combining rigorous research with cutting-edge technology, Simprints Technology Ltd hope to generate new insights that will support stronger immunisation programs in Ghana and beyond. This is a key opportunity to learn how digital innovation can support stronger health systems and healthier futures for children." How will the trial be carried out? * This week, a team from the University of Ghana, led by Prof. Chris Guure, will begin fieldwork to enrol a cohort of over 4,000 women in their second and third trimesters of pregnancy, or with infants under six months, across the Oti region and collect data on their vaccination status. * The catchment communities of 131 health facilities across seven of the nine districts of the Oti region, where the mothers live, have been randomly assigned to control and treatment groups. * The cohort of mothers will be surveyed again at 12 and 24 months to identify the effect of Simprints' intervention. The RCT will measure several specific outcomes. * Completion of the full four-dose malaria sequence * Completion of the full routine childhood vaccination sequence * Timeliness of vaccine delivery * Facility Vaccine Data Accuracy Simprints Technology Ltd is looking forward to working with its partners on this innovative research and delving into the findings during 2026.
