Walker's weekly: dr. Jim's summary of key global macro developments - 10 april 2026. 31 Views 10 Apr 2026 02:45 Syndicated * Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd had a bunch of meetings in Beijing last week, the views from Beijing were relatively relaxed about the Chinese economy, if not the global economy. Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd put out a Weebits note earlier this week called China Country Visit: Surprisingly Upbeat. * Then Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd travelled to Jakarta where the mood was much more subdued, although still a degree of feeling that there was resilience in the Indonesian economy, partly because it's not that open to international trade. * The Weebits note, Indonesia Country Visit: Danantara, was released on Wednesday. More in-depth reports on China and Indonesia will be published in coming weeks. Full Insight Greetings from Kuala Lumpur China country visit * Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd had a number of meetings in Beijing last week where the views were relatively relaxed about prospects for the Chinese economy. The possibility of war between China and Taiwan and tariff issues with US that were raised in its visit last year had disappeared in this year views. * Obviously there are issues for China as regards oil supply and oil products and various other inputs such as fertilisers but generally most commentators were saying 4.5% to 5% growth, which is the forecast from the NPC meetings in March, is achievable. * The focus of the 15th five-year plan was strongly on technology and some of the top end industries in China, there was a degree of confidence among its Chinese contacts that had replaced concern during its 2025 visit. Indonesia country visit * Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd then flew to Jakarta for an Indonesia country visit this week. In contrast to the views from Beijing, the mood was less upbeat on the Indonesian economy. * Indonesian economy is less open to international trade than some of its Asean peers, which has been something of a negative over the years, but at the moment might be a positive. But how to achieve President Prabowo's proposed goal of 8% growth is difficult to see. * However, the sovereign wealth fund - Danantara could play a more important role for the Indonesian economy. Unlike other sovereign funds, it doesn't have that much in the way of dollar revenue coming in as a result of overseas sales of Indonesian commodities. The interesting part of Danantara is the asset management side, which is intended to address the issue of state-owned enterprises in Indonesia, of which there are over 1000. This is exactly what Indonesia needs, something to break the logjam, a game changer, which will address the issues of inefficiency and vested interests in an obese public sector. Malaysia country visit * Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd is still on tour and currently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd has had a couple meetings so far and more meetings set for Friday. It's definitely a bit more downbeat, not so much because of the state of the Malaysian economy, but big concerns about the prospect of supply shortages of oil products, fertilisers and helium to support various industries including the all-important semiconductor sector in Penang. * Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd will publish in-depth reports on these three countries after finishing all the country visits, but that will take Smartkarma Innovations Pte Ltd at least couple weeks. Speak to you from Scotland next week. Bye for now. Related Insights
