Cherry Hill Diner demolition underway ahead of new Spark Car Wash development. Demolition crews arrived today at the former Cherry Hill Diner property on Route 38, marking the start of the site's redevelopment into a new Spark Car Wash location. In just one day the crews have already made significant progress in the effort to fully demolish the building which has been a beloved diner since the 1960s. Less than two weeks ago, a property on Route 70 at South Cornell Avenue - directly across from King of Pizza - was also cleared in preparation for construction. Both locations were originally approved as Tidal Wave Auto Spa projects. However, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported last month that the properties and development plans were sold to Spark Car Wash, which is now moving forward with construction. The two car wash projects received Planning Board approval more than three years ago, leading many residents to question whether they would ever be built. The former Cherry Hill Diner site, in particular, remained vacant for years after closing, with little visible activity. In a February update, I reported that demolition permits had been issued for both properties, signaling that redevelopment activity was finally nearing commencement. The Cherry Hill Diner property, located at the intersection of Route 38 and Cooper Landing Road, is now actively being demolished to make way for the new Spark Car Wash. The project received Planning Board approval in January 2023. The diner originally opened in 1965 as the Windsor Diner. In 2002, new ownership purchased the restaurant and renamed it the Cherry Hill Diner, operating it successfully for more than two decades. Shortly after redevelopment approvals were granted in 2023, the property sale was completed and the diner permanently closed on April 30 of that year. Unfortunately for fans of the landmark restaurant, the entire building is being removed to accommodate the new development. Site plans show the car wash tunnel building positioned parallel to Cooper Landing Road toward the rear of the property. Vacuum stations will be located closer to Cooper Landing Road. Notably, there will be no direct vehicle access from Route 38 into the facility. Spark Car Wash planned for Route 70 and Cornell Avenue. The second Cherry Hill location is planned for 2301-2311 Route 70 West at the corner of South Cornell Avenue. The property sits adjacent to the Audi dealership and directly across Route 70 from King of Pizza. This location received Planning Board approval in December 2022. As with many modern express car wash facilities, the site will operate in a continuous loop design. Vehicles will enter the wash tunnel, proceed through the automated cleaning process, and then exit to a designated vacuum area. One notable difference at this location is the site's layout. The wash tunnel building will be positioned closer to Route 70, while the vacuum stations will be located behind the building along an adjacent unnamed roadway. With demolition now underway at both sites, Cherry Hill residents can expect visible construction activity to accelerate in the coming months as Spark Car Wash moves forward with its South Jersey expansion plans.
