Leading energy collaboration at ANTech is Takaaki Sano of the Infrastructure Collaboration Development Promotion Office. Sano is approaching the next generation of power platform from three key themes. "The energy management system sEMSA(TM), which promotes the use of EVs and other technologies, aims to maximize renewable energy utilization and reduce costs. The Vehicle to Everything (V2X) initiative focuses on developing charge/discharge devices that connect and control power infrastructure and mobility. Battery reuse involves repurposing vehicle batteries as storage batteries after their automotive life span ends. My mission is to integrate these elements to build a system that adds value to mobility while ensuring healthy energy circulation." (Sano) Controlling batteries in groups through Fusion with Nissin Electric. Among these, the key lies in battery reuse. Supporting this massive circulation system is the strong synergy with Nissin Electric. "While each battery collected from scrapped vehicles is tiny compared to the whole of society, when they are combined they allow us to create large storage battery systems that adjust the power balance in substations and power plants. That is an integration of Sumitomo Electric's technology for controlling in-vehicle batteries as "groups," combined with Nissin Electric's substation equipment and power electronics technology required for grid connection, which leads to a total energy solution. The strength of the Sumitomo Electric Group lies in its flexibility, which allows us to offer solutions ranging from total coordination to providing only the necessary functions, such as energy management, according to our customers' needs." The Nissin-Sumiden Energy System Development Center was established to combine the strengths of both companies. ANTech plays a key role in bridging the gap between the cultures of the automotive and energy industries. Within a few years, they aim to put into operation an energy storage system that reuses in-vehicle batteries, developed collaboratively with car manufacturers. A "reverse proposal" That changes the future 10 years ahead. Japanese firms lead global standardization of All-Photonics networks. Several major Japanese telecommunications companies have successfully secured international recognition for a new framework designed to support low-latency and energy-efficient networks in the AI era. The framework, developed by KDDI Corporation, NTT, Inc., 1Finity Inc., NEC Corporation, Rakuten Mobile, Inc., Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., was approved as an international standard by the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) on August 13, 2026. This framework is a significant step towards realizing the All-Photonics Network (APN), a key component of Japan's strategy for next-generation information and communication infrastructure. The APN aims to provide high-capacity, low-latency, and energy-efficient communications, facilitating real-time data processing from remote sensors and robots. The IOWN Global Forum, an organization focused on promoting APN-based next-generation communication infrastructure, is currently developing technical documents on APN architecture and functional requirements. Concurrently, research on photonic network federation technology, which ensures stable interconnection among APNs from different providers, is progressing. This research is crucial for developing interconnection methods and evaluating them with actual equipment. Despite the progress, achieving global interoperability and adoption of the APN framework requires broad international consensus. To address this, Japanese telecommunications operators and equipment manufacturers have spearheaded the development of this standardized framework, now known as Recommendation ITU-T Y.3335. This framework outlines network configurations and technical requirements for low-latency, energy-efficient communication paths across different operators. The ITU-T's approval provides a universal framework for APN, facilitating the creation of APN services that span multiple operators and offer high-speed, energy-efficient communication services across geographically distributed sites. The seven companies involved will continue to promote standardization activities both in Japan and internationally, leveraging the network technologies and expertise developed in Japan. Within ITU-T, these companies are also contributing to the development of a recommendation on the functional architecture for low-latency and energy-efficient networks, expected by October 2028. Their ongoing efforts aim to support the global adoption of APN, aligning with the demands of the AI era.
AFL, Corning, Sumitomo and TeraHop set four-core fibre MSA. August 12, 2026 AFL, Corning Incorporated, Sumitomo Electric Industries and TeraHop have formed a multi-source agreement (MSA) to establish common specifications for four-core multicore fibre in AI data-centre applications. Called the SDM4 MCF MSA, the initiative will define the fibre's design, performance and interoperability requirements, with an initial focus on passive optical connections. The companies plan to release the first specification publicly in the coming months. The move addresses growing demand for higher-density optical infrastructure as hyperscalers scale out AI clusters. Multicore fibre can carry more connectivity within the same physical footprint than conventional single-core fibre, offering a potential path to higher capacity in constrained data-centre environments. The MSA will cover intra-campus networks and other short-reach interconnects operating in the O-band, typically centred around 1310 nm. It is also intended to provide a technical base for wider standards development at bodies including the ITU-T, IEC and IEEE. An MSA is an industry-led, multi-vendor technical framework designed to ensure that components from different suppliers can work together. The four companies said additional participants would be invited after the initial specification is released, supporting the broader multicore-fibre ecosystem and market adoption. Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord Consortium secures HVDC cable Framework Agreement with SSEN Transmission. Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Electric), together with its project partner Van Oord Offshore Wind UK Ltd (Van Oord), has signed a HVDC Framework Agreement with SSEN Transmission, agreeing to proceed with initial design and engineering works for the proposed 525kV Shetland 2 HVDC link between Shetland and the Scottish mainland. The Framework Agreement establishes a long-term strategic partnership between SSEN Transmission and the Consortium for the engineering, supply and installation of HVDC cable projects including the Shetland 2 link. The proposed Shetland 2 link will reinforce the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, enable greater integration of renewable energy, and support Scotland's and the UK's clean power and energy security objectives, while also delivering long-term economic benefits for local communities. Under the Framework Agreement, SSEN Transmission and the Consortium expect to enter into a call-off contract in 2026 for the manufacturing of the 525 kV cables for the Shetland 2 link, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. Cable manufacturing is expected to commence in 2Q 2027 at Sumitomo Electric's state-of-the-art submarine cable manufacturing facility at Port of Nigg, Scotland. The over £350 million investment in the Scottish factory is expected to create more than 650 direct and indirect jobs once operational, as well as additional employment opportunities across associated and supporting supply chains. 670 direct and indirect jobs are expected to be supported through project execution, installation and related activities associated with delivery of the Shetland 2 link. Combining Sumitomo Electric's more than 100 years of expertise in subsea cable systems with Van Oord's world-class offshore installation capabilities, the Consortium is committed to delivering the Shetland 2 link safely, reliably and efficiently. The Framework Agreement marks an important milestone in strengthening the long-term partnership between SSEN Transmission and the Consortium, fostering innovation, accelerating localization, and supporting the continued modernisation of Scotland's and the UK's electricity transmission infrastructure as part of the transition to a secure, resilient and low-carbon energy system.
