AFL, Corning, Sumitomo and TeraHop set four-core fibre MSA. August 12, 2026 AFL, Corning Incorporated, Sumitomo Electric Industries and TeraHop have formed a multi-source agreement (MSA) to establish common specifications for four-core multicore fibre in AI data-centre applications. Called the SDM4 MCF MSA, the initiative will define the fibre's design, performance and interoperability requirements, with an initial focus on passive optical connections. The companies plan to release the first specification publicly in the coming months. The move addresses growing demand for higher-density optical infrastructure as hyperscalers scale out AI clusters. Multicore fibre can carry more connectivity within the same physical footprint than conventional single-core fibre, offering a potential path to higher capacity in constrained data-centre environments. The MSA will cover intra-campus networks and other short-reach interconnects operating in the O-band, typically centred around 1310 nm. It is also intended to provide a technical base for wider standards development at bodies including the ITU-T, IEC and IEEE. An MSA is an industry-led, multi-vendor technical framework designed to ensure that components from different suppliers can work together. The four companies said additional participants would be invited after the initial specification is released, supporting the broader multicore-fibre ecosystem and market adoption. Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord Consortium secures HVDC cable Framework Agreement with SSEN Transmission. Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Electric), together with its project partner Van Oord Offshore Wind UK Ltd (Van Oord), has signed a HVDC Framework Agreement with SSEN Transmission, agreeing to proceed with initial design and engineering works for the proposed 525kV Shetland 2 HVDC link between Shetland and the Scottish mainland. The Framework Agreement establishes a long-term strategic partnership between SSEN Transmission and the Consortium for the engineering, supply and installation of HVDC cable projects including the Shetland 2 link. The proposed Shetland 2 link will reinforce the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, enable greater integration of renewable energy, and support Scotland's and the UK's clean power and energy security objectives, while also delivering long-term economic benefits for local communities. Under the Framework Agreement, SSEN Transmission and the Consortium expect to enter into a call-off contract in 2026 for the manufacturing of the 525 kV cables for the Shetland 2 link, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. Cable manufacturing is expected to commence in 2Q 2027 at Sumitomo Electric's state-of-the-art submarine cable manufacturing facility at Port of Nigg, Scotland. The over £350 million investment in the Scottish factory is expected to create more than 650 direct and indirect jobs once operational, as well as additional employment opportunities across associated and supporting supply chains. 670 direct and indirect jobs are expected to be supported through project execution, installation and related activities associated with delivery of the Shetland 2 link. Combining Sumitomo Electric's more than 100 years of expertise in subsea cable systems with Van Oord's world-class offshore installation capabilities, the Consortium is committed to delivering the Shetland 2 link safely, reliably and efficiently. The Framework Agreement marks an important milestone in strengthening the long-term partnership between SSEN Transmission and the Consortium, fostering innovation, accelerating localization, and supporting the continued modernisation of Scotland's and the UK's electricity transmission infrastructure as part of the transition to a secure, resilient and low-carbon energy system. For just one car model, there are over 20-30 variations, each requiring unique assembly steps. "This wasn't a commodity our team had experience building. We had to learn from scratch and train new operators quickly," explains Maurice Stallard, Director of Engineering and Manufacturing at HJI. Traditional training methods - paper-based instructions or tribal knowledge - weren't sufficient for scaling operations or ensuring consistent quality. Without an error-proofing system, mistakes were inevitable, putting customer contracts at risk. High Risk of Part Number Errors Tracking part numbers manually - especially those over 10 digits long - led to costly mix-ups in previous supply chains. Incorrect parts were installed on finished goods, causing delays, rework, and potential compliance violations. "We knew we didn't want to track everything in a binder anymore. We needed a system that could eliminate errors at the source," says Stallard. Without automated traceability and digital part verification, errors could slip through unnoticed, impacting Tier 1 supplier quality metrics and customer confidence. "Demonstrating automatic error-proofing capabilities is one of the reasons we won this large automotive contract. It helped alleviate a lot of initial concerns from our customer," said Stallard. Outcomes in Nine Months * Connected 12 workstations * Digitized 151 workflows * Expanded customer contracts from 2 to 14 models * Shipped 1,685 units, all error-free HJI has eliminated assembly errors, improved quality control, and ensured 100% part traceability, leading to fewer defects, reduced scrap, and higher customer satisfaction. HJI also feels confident in its robust traceability across its assembly lines. Every part is assigned a serial number which can be traced back to the exact operator, workstation, and parts. By easily tracking each part's journey, HJI has reduced scrap and rework. "We're hitting our quality metrics, ensuring that we deliver products our customers feel good about selling," said Stallard.
