Surescripts

Secure health data exchange for prescriptions

Overview

Surescripts operates a nationwide health information network that connects pharmacies, doctors, and insurance providers to securely share patient prescription data. The platform works by integrating directly into clinical software to automate tasks like sending electronic prescriptions, checking insurance coverage for specific drugs in real-time, and retrieving a patient's medication history. Unlike many competitors, Surescripts is uniquely owned by major pharmacy associations and pharmacy benefit managers, allowing it to maintain a massive network that links nearly all electronic health record vendors and pharmacies in the U.S. The company's goal is to increase patient safety and lower healthcare costs by ensuring accurate health intelligence is available at the point of care.

Surescripts, Oracle Health partner to help clear prescription barriers for patients nationwide.

Surescripts, Oracle Health partner to help clear prescription barriers for patients nationwide. Key takeaways Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation will be available to prescribers inside the Oracle Health workflow1. Prior Authorization Automation returns approvals within seconds when all criteria are met for available medications, helping patients start therapy sooner. Published on 09/24/2026 at 12:50 pm EDT Business Wire Surescripts(R) and Oracle Health are working together to help remove the barriers that keep patients from starting the medication their care team prescribed. Through the partnership, Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation will be available to prescribers within the Oracle Health workflow, helping patients access needed therapies without delays. In a 2025 survey, 95% of physicians said the prior authorization process sometimes delays care, and 79% said it at least sometimes leads to treatment abandonment. Additionally, 1 in 4 people indicated that the cost of medications prevented them from filling a prescription, according to a report. "When a prior authorization is resolved in seconds instead of days, it can make the difference between a patient starting treatment on time or not at all," said Frank Harvey, chief executive officer, Surescripts. "Expanding our collaboration with Oracle Health puts Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation into the hands of more prescribers to reduce delays and fill gaps in care, helping patients access needed treatments faster." "Patients shouldn't have to wait on paperwork or find out at the pharmacy counter that something went wrong with their prescriptions. Bringing Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation into the Oracle Health workflow reduces the administrative burden for caregivers and enables care teams to help patients access medications faster," said Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager, Oracle Health and Life Sciences. "This collaboration is indicative of how healthcare organizations working together can benefit patients." Oracle and Surescripts will also explore incorporating First-Fill Abandonment within Oracle Health workflows to give providers insights into patients' medication adherence before claims data arrives, allowing for earlier intervention when needed. 1 The new capabilities are planned for general availability in 2027. Background * Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation automatically matches clinical data with determination criteria at the time of prescribing by automatically retrieving the required information from the patient's electronic health record and sending it electronically to the pharmacy benefit manager (PBM). When prior authorization requirements are met, the request can often be approved without human intervention, while also creating an audit trail that can be reviewed at any point. If a request cannot be approved based on the clinical information submitted, the prescriber is prompted to complete a prior authorization request. Prior Authorization Automation delivers 18-second (median) approvals when all criteria are met for available medications. * Surescripts First-Fill Abandonment proactively monitors new prescriptions sent across the Surescripts network, and flags when patients don't pick them up at pharmacy. These early insights enable provider organizations to tailor patient support strategies that can result in improved value-based care performance, including STARS & HEDIS measures, and lead to better patient care. About Surescripts The Surescripts platform brings healthcare together to inform and accelerate decisions, helping keep patient care on track. Our network reaches nearly every patient in the country and gives Surescripts an unmatched, near-real-time view of prescribing and care activity at scale. With our suite of solutions and the trusted relationships we've built across healthcare, we turn health intelligence into action that accelerates interoperability, clinical data exchange, prior authorizations and more. Conference Session Featuring Surescripts When: Tuesday, June 9 | 2:45-3:30 p.m. PDT Where: AHIP 2026, Las Vegas, NV * Justin McMartin, Interoperability Director, Product Innovation, Surescripts * Matt Hartzler, Value Based Care Director, Product Innovation, Surescripts Session Overview: Health insurance providers are under increasing pressure to improve quality performance, reduce provider abrasion, and close gaps in care across large, diverse populations - often with limited operational lift. This session examines how payer operators are moving beyond manual outreach and point-to-point communication by using pharmacy fill data and network event signals to systematically identify risk, prioritize gaps and trigger timely provider action. Find out more about how Surescripts is helping health plans address some of the biggest challenges impacting their members, including: * Closing gaps in care and improving medication adherence across member populations. Care managers often lack a complete picture of what medications their members are actually taking, making it difficult to spot adherence issues or intervene before small problems become costly ones. Surescripts provides timely, comprehensive medication history so care teams can help close gaps early. * Keeping providers informed about coverage changes, formulary updates and other plan-critical information. When formulary changes or coverage updates don't reach providers in time, members face delays at the pharmacy, abandoned prescriptions and frustrating care disruptions. Surescripts enables secure, HIPAA-compliant communication between health plans and the providers serving their members, so the right information gets to the right clinician at the right time. * Accessing a complete, nationwide view of member medical records to support better decisions and close care gaps. Health plans need current clinical information from across the care continuum to power risk adjustment, quality programs, utilization management, and care coordination - but that data is scattered across networks. As a designated QHIN under TEFCA, Surescripts Health Information Network LLC(TM) through Interconnect(TM) gives health plans a single connection point to access up-to-date medical records from health information networks nationwide. About Surescripts Our purpose is to serve the nation through simpler, trusted health intelligence sharing, in order to increase patient safety, lower costs, and ensure quality care. At Surescripts, we bring healthcare together to inform and accelerate decisions, helping keep patient care on track. With the Surescripts Network Alliance(R), we're empowering the healthcare ecosystem with intelligence and interoperability for smarter, faster prescribing, prior authorization, treatment, care management and more.
