Overview

Terrajoule provides a dispatchable solar energy and storage system for industrial and agricultural customers as an alternative to diesel generators and PV+battery setups. Its DG-S platform uses concentrated solar power with parabolic troughs to generate steam, which drives a Skinner Universal Unaflow steam piston engine connected to an AC generator for on-demand electricity. Thermal energy is stored in large insulated pressurized water tanks, enabling 24/7 operation without relying on lithium batteries. The system targets on-site, off-grid or grid-adjacent installations with multi-million-dollar capital costs; the company was founded in 2009 by Stephen J. Bisset and later restarted after acquiring the original IP, but is noted as out of business around 2019–2021.
