Tesco Bank

Tesco Bank

Branded banking products and services

Overview

Tesco Bank offers banking products and services branded as Tesco Bank, serving over three million customers with deposits, loans, and everyday accounts linked to the Clubcard loyalty program. Barclays provides the underlying banking infrastructure and services, while Tesco Bank delivers its own customer-facing brand and online and support channels. The difference comes from the Tesco Clubcard integration and retailer-branded banking that pairs simple financial products with a loyalty rewards ecosystem under Barclays’ banking engine. The goal is to help customers manage their money a little better each day through straightforward products and reliable service, while rewarding loyalty.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Pinnacle's January 2025 pet-insurance partnership widens Tesco Bank's cross-sell and retention.
  • Glasgow and Edinburgh hubs centralize operations, lowering complexity versus scattered offices.
  • Barclays' stronger balance sheet and distribution should support Tesco-branded lending growth.

What critics are saying

  • February 2026 Newcastle closure risks 162 jobs and drains operational knowledge.
  • Integration into Barclays through 2026 creates churn, duplicated systems, and service slippage.
  • Tesco Bank's retail-banking identity is disappearing; Barclays could fully absorb the franchise.

What makes Tesco Bank unique

  • Tesco Bank still sells Tesco-branded banking through Barclays' November 2024 partnership.
  • Tesco retains insurance, ATMs, travel money, and gift cards after the sale.
  • Its grocery-linked brand reaches millions of Tesco shoppers, unlike pure-play digital lenders.

Tesco Bank to close Newcastle office as roles shift to Glasgow hub

Tesco Bank to close Newcastle office as roles shift to Glasgow hub. Hundreds of Tesco Bank roles are at risk after the firm confirmed plans to relocate the majority of its customer service staff to Glasgow (Image: Archives) Hundreds of Tesco Bank roles are at risk after the firm confirmed plans to relocate the majority of its customer service staff to Glasgow. More than 160 jobs could be affected under proposals to close the bank's offices at Quorum Business Park in North Tyneside later this year, with roles transferring to its existing service centre in Glasgow. Tesco Bank said the move would "simplify" its operations as it continues its integration with Barclays, which completed the acquisition of Tesco Bank's banking operations in November 2024. Around 162 staff are currently based at the Newcastle site. A formal consultation process is now under way. The bank said affected employees would be "strongly supported", with a focus on redeployment opportunities within Tesco Bank and Barclays. Glasgow will remain a central hub for the business, with no changes planned for Tesco Bank staff already contracted in the city who moved to Barclays' Clyde Place campus in summer 2025. The bank will also maintain a presence in Edinburgh and is currently seeking an alternative site in the same area, replacing its existing office at South Gyle Crescent. Tesco Insurance and Money Services, which also operates from Quorum Business Park, will not be affected by the proposals.
