Overview

The National Archives collects and preserves archival records deposited with the agency, including both public and private archives, and makes them accessible for the public. It sets requirements and standards for archiving, provides guidance, and supervises public archives, while coordinating private archives. The agency defines best practices for storing, organizing, and accessing records, and audits and supports public institutions to follow them, coordinating nationwide archival work. Its goal is durable preservation of the nation’s records and public access for research, accountability, and historical understanding.
