Workers reject Swedish BPO Transcom's meagre proposal to exit Netherlands. Swedish-owned contact centre company Transcom is proposing to shut its last remaining site in the Netherlands, ending 26 years of operations in the city of Groningen and putting around 150 jobs at risk. UNI affiliate FNV has rejected the company's final offer on a social plan, saying it falls far short of what workers with ten, 15 and in some cases 25 years of service should receive. A decade ago, the company employed roughly 1,000 people across several sites in the city. By the time the closure was announced, the site was servicing a single remaining client. Transcom has described the decision as a strategic restructuring following a review of its regional operational footprint and says Dutch clients will in future be served from specialized international hubs elsewhere in its network. For FNV, that is precisely the problem. The union points out that Transcom is publicly promoting further growth through operations abroad and artificial intelligence at the very moment it is telling the workers who built the Groningen business that there is no money for a decent settlement. "These employees have contributed to Transcom's success for many years," said FNV union representative Izabela Muchowska. "A company that closes a site cannot send those workers away with a package that barely clears the statutory minimum." FNV is calling for a severance payment of 1.8 times the statutory transition payment, with a floor of €7,500. The union is also seeking larger budgets for training, retraining and legal advice, an improved pension arrangement for older workers, and release from work duties once redundancy has been decided. Transcom has instead held to a limited severance arrangement, a signing bonus and redeployment options within the group, including relocation to Spain. For the great majority of the Groningen workforce, FNV says, moving to another country is not a realistic option. Breakdown in negotiations with the company According to FNV, negotiations stalled on the grounds that Transcom's Dutch entity lacks the funds for a decent and fair social plan, even though the Swedish parent guarantees that entity and has the means available. "Transcom should do right by its Dutch employees, some of whom have worked for the company for the last 25 years, and offer a decent social plan," said Benjamin Parton, Head of ICTS at UNI Global Union. "The sector is going through a transition, pivoting to artificial intelligence and investing in offshore hubs, but there needs to be recognition of the workers navigating that change." FNV has called on Transcom to come back to the negotiating table with a proposal that does justice to the position of the Groningen workers. If the company does not, the union and its members will decide together on the next steps.

Watch: interview insight series. Leading Voices is launching with two video interview series already available for your viewing. More topics are coming, with every series tackling core questions around one of the industry's biggest challenges. How can leaders adopt AI without losing the human side of service? On that human note, how can more women be seen, supported, and advance into CX leadership? You'll find several seasons of expert perspectives on both in each of the following. AI, But Make It Human. Leading Voices: AI, But Make It Human is built for leaders trying to make sense of AI inside real operating environments - not in theory, and not in product demos, but in the day-to-day reality of customer operations. Across the series, Transcom leaders and industry experts unpack what AI is actually changing in CX, where the hype outpaces reality, and what organizations need to do to adopt it responsibly. Recent episodes have explored topics such as the rise of AI-specific roles inside the enterprise, from prompt library management to AI quality and oversight, and the growing need for human review as AI becomes embedded in customer service workflows. Other conversations look at a more cultural question: what happens to authenticity when AI starts shaping how Transcom write, communicate and work? The thread running through the series is consistent: AI can create efficiency and new opportunity, but it still requires human judgment, governance and a clear point of view on where people add the most value. Amplifying Women's Leadership. Leading Voices: Amplifying Women's Leadership focuses on the women shaping customer experience from the front lines. Through conversations with leaders from brands such as Fabletics, Travelzoo and JustFab, as well as voices from across Transcom, the series explores the realities of leadership, career growth and transformation in a fast-changing CX landscape. Recent episodes touch on everything from building confidence and advocating for your work to designing systems and teams that can scale through change. In her conversation, Transcom's CFO, Cecilia Bergendahl shared a practical message for women navigating their careers: hard work matters, but so does visibility, leaders need to raise their hand, share ideas and make their contributions seen. Another insight comes from Michelle Pickel, Vice President of Customer Experience and Trust at Subeta, who spoke about why women need to get involved in AI now, not later, so they can help shape the frameworks, guardrails and decisions that will define the next era of CX. These and other conversations go beyond inspiration to offer practical insight into leadership, resilience, and the role women can play in shaping the future of the industry. Hear what Cecilia had to say in her full episode here and discover more of Michelle's wisdom in its full conversation. These are just a few of the series Transcom is proud to provide to executives with their gaze fixed on the future and their ears wide open to tips that will take them there. Startup and scaleup leaders, keep your eyes peeled for a dedicated discussion series coming soon. In conclusion. The future of customer experience is moving fast, and the best way to stay ahead is to learn from those actively leading the charge.
