While Chief Executive Officer Michelle Jablko's total remuneration of $5,825,784 makes her the company's highest paid executive, Transurban's four other executives also all earned totals ranging from $1.6 to $2.6 million. The median annual Australian wage is $74,100, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, making Jablko's earnings of $5.8 million 79 times those of the typical Australian. Transurban operates toll roads in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, earning it $432 million in after-tax profits last financial year. According to its latest company report, revenue from motorists increased in each city compared with the year before. Sydney motorists account for the bulk of toll revenue, accounting for just under 50 per cent of all tolls paid. The company also has some operations in the USA, however these contributed to less than 10 per cent of its revenue. It's not just Transurban's executives taking home lucrative pay packets, with the toll road companies' influential line-up of nine board members receiving total packages ranging from $292,488 to $696,500. Chairman of Transurban's board, Craig Drummond, is also currently Chair of the AFL Commission, alongside other roles. Drive asked Transurban why its executives receive such high salaries and how the company justifies increasing toll road fares, given that many Australians are struggling with a rising cost of living. A spokesperson declined to provide an on the record response regarding the CEO's salary. However, Drive understands Executive pay is determined by the Transurban Board. The company's spokesperson said the benefit of Transurban's toll roads for motorists is faster and safer travel. "We recognise cost-of-living pressures are impacting many households and remain focused on delivering value for our customers," the spokesperson said. "Our customers benefit from safer, faster and more reliable journeys on our roads, which have been independently assessed as being twice as safe as comparable motorways." Transurban claims the journey from Parramatta to Sydney's CBD on WestConnex is now up to half an hour shorter than it was 10 years ago, despite the population of Sydney growing by one million over this period.
