Overview

University Hospital is New Jersey's public academic medical center, providing hospital and emergency care to Newark and patients statewide. Its trauma center is the only state-designated Level I center in northern New Jersey, and its emergency department, Newark EMS, and specialty programs support complex and routine care. As the principal teaching hospital of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, University Hospital links clinical care with medical education and research, including programs in cancer, neurosurgery, and liver transplantation. The hospital traces its roots to City Hospital, which opened in Newark in 1882; the University Hospital name dates to 1981, and it is headquartered in Newark, New Jersey.
