UpTogether

Advocates policy change; funds community empowerment

Overview

UpTogether is a national organization that aims to shift policies, systems, and beliefs so that all Americans are recognized for their strengths and empowered to build power and improve their economic and social mobility. It accomplishes this by investing in financially under-resourced communities, elevating lived experiences, and mobilizing people to support strength-based policies and practices that drive systems change. Unlike groups that focus only on services, UpTogether centers on changing the structures around people—policies, institutions, and social norms—and on creating lasting power and autonomy for individuals. Its goal is a society where everyone is seen and invested in for their strengths and can pursue economic and social mobility through stronger communities and policies.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Illinois families joined a September 2024 pilot, extending UpTogether's active program footprint into 2025.
  • Camp Harbor View's 2025 Boston pilot expands proof points with 50 households.
  • Its 2026 corporate wellbeing packages open a new commercial channel beyond philanthropy.

What critics are saying

  • UpTogether still depends on grants and donor-funded pilots, limiting predictable revenue.
  • Guaranteed-income politics can flip fast; one hostile legislature can kill statewide contracts.
  • If donor enthusiasm fades, UpTogether loses capital, participants, and its core operating model.

What makes UpTogether unique

  • UpTogether runs cash-transfer programs and community funds, not just advocacy, since 2020.
  • Its platform distributed over $210 million to 200,000 people across nationwide pilots.
  • It pairs unrestricted cash with cohort data, strengthening policy research and employer partnerships.

Texas Methodist Foundation Fall 2023 Grant Recipients Empower Individuals And Lift Up Communities

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Texas Methodist Foundation (TMF) has awarded $440,000 to 42 churches, schools, and nonprofit organizations during its Fall 2023 grant cycle. This cycle’s recipients are making positive social impacts through innovative faith-based initiatives that are lifting up communities by focusing on the personal and financial wellbeing of individuals and families in those communities.Recipients are improving communities in innovative ways, engaging both spiritual growth and positive life outlook along with access to resources and services. They provide avenues to address and improve mental health, grow food to share with food-insecure neighbors, train youth to excel in new job opportunities and build a financial future, and break the cycle of poverty for single mothers, among other activities. These organizations are directly serving the needs of individuals in ways that strengthen the social fabric of neighborhoods and nurture a sense of possibility and belonging.“We are proud to partner with each of these organizations as they improve the lives of those they serve,” said Wendy Abel, TMF’s vice president of Grants Ministry. “They understand the neighborhoods they serve in detail and are learning how to build on the assets those neighborhoods already have, giving the grants we provide the greatest possible impact.”The recipients listed below provide an example of the great work being done by all the recipients.
