EnerSys to produce 'defence-focused Li cells' in revised gigafactory plans. Published - July 28, 2026 04:00 pm BST. EnerSys has refocused plans for its $500 million battery cell gigafactory in South Carolina for US defence needs - and is ending a tech partnership with French Li cells developer Verkor. The US lead and lithium major has also revised the plant's construction schedule to now start work in the first half of fiscal 2028, instead of early 2025 as announced when South Carolina was selected to host the 4GWh per annum facility in 2024. The battery maker's revised plans were confirmed on July 23. EnerSys also said it now expects to receive a revised grant of $150 million from the Department of Energy. Full production is now set to start around three years after construction begins. Under the updated plans, EnerSys expects the 500,000ft[2] facility to have an initial production capacity of around 1GWh, using federal, state, local funding and operating cash flow to fund the facility's capital cost. The plant will support US defence requirements for secure, foreign entity of concern compliant lithium ion cells and strengthen the country's supply chain. Given the facility's refined defence-focused scope, EnerSys said it intends to "transition away from its technology relationship with Verkor" and does not expect the French company to serve as the project's technology partner. Instead, EnerSys will draw on support from what it described as its decades-long, established technology partnerships within its existing aerospace and defence supply base. President and CEO Shawn O'Connell said the revised strategy builds on the firm's role as a trusted supplier of stored energy solutions for US defence applications. "By dedicating this facility to defence-focused lithium cell development and manufacturing, we will further strengthen a secure, resilient, domestically sourced supply chain aligned with evolving US national security requirements."

Embedder and Verkor partner to build AI-driven chip design and firmware development stack

Embedder and Verkor have partnered to link AI-driven chip design with AI-driven firmware development. Verkor's Conductor system recently designed VerCore, a RISC-V CPU core, from a 219-word prompt in roughly 12 hours. The core runs at 1.48 GHz in simulation with a CoreMark score of 3,261. Embedder's AI coding agent now writes and tests firmware for the new chip on real silicon. The partnership addresses a traditional bottleneck: new silicon typically requires bring-up code, drivers, and reference firmware before deployment. Embedder builds context from reference documentation and drives test equipment to verify firmware functionality. The collaboration aims to compress full system development from years to days, covering the complete stack from written specification to verified embedded software.

Following the successful completion of the project, mass production of LMFP cells in Europe is targeted by 2032, with electric vehicles and maritime as the main applications. Coordinated by leading Norwegian research organisation SINTEF, OLiMPUS brings together 16 partners from across the entire battery value chain. These include Volvo Trucks, Magna Steyr, and cell manufacturer Verkor, alongside synthetic graphite anode supplier Vianode and Corvus Energy - an energy storage specialist serving the maritime sector. In addition to producing and supply more than 150 kg of LMFP cathode active material, Integrals Power is also responsible for scaling-up and industrialising the manufacturing process and assisting cell prototyping and performance validation. The project, which runs until 2030, will see over 130 automotive-grade cells produced on SINTEF's pilot lines and Verkor Gigafactory Facilities, in both pouch and prismatic form factors and in capacities from 10-80Ah. Target energy density is up to 220Wh/kg. Sustainability is another key metric: water is used as a solvent instead of toxic and highly flammable NMP, a semi-dry electrode coating process uses far less energy in the drying stage than conventional wet slurries, and synthetic graphite for the anode further reduces the overall carbon footprint. Compared to a benchmark Nickel Cobalt Manganese chemistry - NMC811 - OLiMPUS is forecast to reduce lifecycle CO[2] -equivalent emissions by approximately 1.8 million tonnes by 2050. Integrals Power Founder and CEO, Behnam Hormozi, said: "Its participation in OLiMPUS is the clearest demonstration yet that Integrals Power's patented LMFP technology is a key enabler for establishing sovereign battery capability in the UK and Europe. Third-party testing has already proven its high energy density, cycle life, and cold weather performance, and this project represents the next milestone in its development as Battery Tech Expo optimise the materials and processes for scale-up. "A successful transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources can only be achieved with a robust, transparent, sustainable, and cost-effective battery supply chain, and that requires alternatives to cell chemistries and manufacturing reliant on critical minerals and Chinese technology. The OLiMPUS project is laying the foundations for this, and we are extremely proud to be a part of it." Integrals Power's LMFP material has a high manganese content of 80%, which enables up to 20% greater energy density than conventional LFP while retaining its key advantages of cost, safety, and long cycle life. This combination of attributes, together with freedom from expensive Nickel and Cobalt, makes it a compelling alternative to NMC, which is still the dominant cell chemistry for EVs made by European and North American vehicle manufacturers. OLiMPUS forecasts cell-level costs at €56-65/kWh, and €67-75 /kWh at pack level: this compares favourably with costs achieved by some Chinese manufacturers of around €64/kWh at pack-level for LFP, and €82/kWh for NMC.[1] China dominates the global battery market for both LFP and NMC chemistries, so establishing production of the breakthrough LMFP chemistry in Europe will provide an ideal solution to all industries seeking an alternative to China that provides the performance needed at an affordable cost. Target applications for OLiMPUS cells include EVs, shipping and other applications. Maritime is a sector facing acute pressure to decarbonise, with most of the global fleet powered by fossil fuels, with the result that it accounts for some 5% of the world's total oil consumption each.[2] Battery-electric propulsion is well-suited to many types of vessel, and LMFP's properties make it the ideal cell chemistry. Maritime and automotive are key industries for Integrals Power's range of LMFP and LFP cathode active materials, together with defence and grid-scale energy storage.

Verkor opens 16 GWh battery cell factory in Dunkirk. French battery manufacturer and Renault partner Verkor has officially opened its battery cell factory in northern France. The plant in Dunkirk has an initial annual capacity of 16 GWh, with plans to expand to 50 GWh by 2030. Verkor has completed construction of its battery cell and module production facility in the port of Dunkirk (French: Dunkerque) in just two years. The facility, named Gigafactory Bourbourg, began construction in November 2023. Upon full operation, it is expected to create around 1,200 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs. French President Emmanuel Macron attended the opening: "The inauguration of this Gigafactory, the third in this Region, demonstrates that reindustrialisation, innovation, and decarbonization can move forward together. We are creating jobs, strengthening our technology and energy autonomy, and preparing the future of mobility in France and across Europe," he said. Verkor's primary customer for its battery cells is the Renault Group. The car manufacturer entered into a strategic partnership with Verkor in 2021, which was later converted into a commercial partnership (a binding supply agreement) in April 2023. Together, the companies aim to develop and manufacture high-performance batteries for Renault's electric vehicles from the C-segment upwards, as well as for Alpine models. Meanwhile, Verkor's research and development operations are based in Grenoble, where the Verkor Innovation Centre (VIC) is located. The VIC began operations at the end of June 2023. According to the latest announcement marking the factory's opening, the first cells produced in Dunkirk will be used in the Alpine A390 from 2026. Renault had previously announced plans to source 10 GWh from Verkor by 2026, increasing to 20 GWh by 2030. However, these figures date back to 2023, and the French company has not provided an update. Notably, Verkor has adhered to its timeline for the opening and its targeted output (16 GWh from 2026, 50 GWh from 2030). While many other companies have revised their targets downward this year, Verkor remains committed to the plans it presented in 2023. "The inauguration of this Gigafactory, the third in this Region, demonstrates that reindustrialisation, innovation, and decarbonization can move forward together. We are creating jobs, strengthening our technology and energy autonomy, and preparing the future of mobility in France and across Europe," the company stated. The VIC develops and validates battery technologies, future battery platforms, and product platforms, while the gigafactory drives large-scale industrialisation. According to company representatives, the VIC's pilot line operates around the clock and has 'produced tens of thousands of cells, guaranteeing process reliability and initial volumes for the customer.' For several months, the gigafactory has been assembling modules using cells from the VIC. With the official opening now complete, it is also producing its own cells. Verkor CEO Benoit Lemaignan commented: "The inauguration of our Gigafactory, five years after Verkor's creation, marks the culmination of an exceptional commitment from our teams and the steadfast support of our partners." He added that the project embodies Europe's energy transition and the industrialisation of key technologies required for it in France and Europe. "It demonstrates that decarbonization and value creation in our territories can go hand in hand. Driven by strong political ambition, this milestone symbolizes Verkor's transition into a European industrial company and opens the way for the imminent delivery of our batteries." The major project was financed thanks to investors and lenders. Verkor states that it has secured over €3 billion since 2020 for the construction of the gigafactory and the VIC. Alone, €2 billion in fresh capital was raised in September 2023 as part of its Series C funding round. "This achievement was made possible by a financial ecosystem combining leading public and private investors, a real asset for supporting the growth of green technologies," the company stated. Verkor's supporters include Macquarie Asset Management, Meridiam, Renault, EQT Ventures, EIT InnoEnergy, and Sibanye-Stillwater.
