Billionaire-led funds pile into Vertiv and Equinix as AI data center demand surges

Billionaire-led hedge funds increased their holdings in two AI data centre stocks during the second quarter, according to analysis of over 900 funds. Vertiv Holdings attracted 32 billionaire-led funds, up from 28 in the first quarter. Equinix had 27 such funds holding stakes, up from 26. Vertiv manufactures equipment for data centres. In Q2, revenue rose 24% year over year, whilst adjusted operating margin improved to 22.6%. Adjusted earnings per share increased 60%. The company benefits from an industry shift towards 800-volt DC power systems, which reduce energy waste and cooling costs. Vertiv's equipment supports this transition, allowing Nvidia racks to connect directly. The International Energy Agency projects global data centre electricity use will roughly double from 485 TWh in 2025 to about 950 TWh in 2030.

Vertiv to acquire UtilityInnovation Group for $1.45B to speed AI data centre power deployment

Vertiv has agreed to acquire UtilityInnovation Group for approximately $1.45 billion in cash, with up to $1.15 billion in additional payments based on EBITDA targets over 12 and 24 months. The acquisition, valued at roughly 13 times UIG's expected 2027 EBITDA, adds microgrid controls, onsite generation orchestration and behind-the-meter power architecture to Vertiv's portfolio. The deal extends Vertiv's capabilities from grid interconnect to chip level, helping data centre operators accelerate deployment amid power constraints. Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, UIG designs microgrid systems for AI data centres across the US and Europe. Vertiv expects the transaction to be earnings accretive in the first year. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in Q4 2026.

Vertiv's strong interest coverage and 12.6% earnings surprise boost institutional confidence

Vertiv Holdings Co was highlighted this week for strong interest coverage ratios, consistent earnings outperformance, and positive analyst sentiment. The company's CEO and CFO participated in a fireside chat at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on 8 September 2026. Vertiv holds a Zacks Rank #2 and has delivered a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 12.6%. The company's narrative projects $22.2 billion in revenue and $4.2 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 27% yearly revenue growth. Analysts note the company's balance sheet strength supports its investment case, which centres on demand for critical digital infrastructure, particularly AI and high-density data centres. However, operational complexity and tariff-related supply chain risks remain concerns that could pressure margins.
