Central interceptor - A landmark project. Watercare's Central Interceptor demanded some of the largest and most technically advanced jacking pipe installed in New Zealand. To support Link Sewers B and C, Hynds developed and manufactured a bespoke lined concrete jacking pipe system capable of withstanding extreme installation loads, deep groundwater conditions and drives exceeding 1,200 metres - helping deliver a critical upgrade to Auckland's wastewater network. The hybrid jacking pipe design posed a number of challenges to manufacture, test and deliver to site: * Ø16mm Spiral reinforcing steel required the design and fabrication of a bespoke reinforcing bending machine * Steel fibre reinforcing to accommodate an 80mm thick sacrificial layer * Joint design and testing to 60m external working pressure * Pipe length maximised to reduce number of joints * State-of-the-art intermediate jacking stations supplied * Special deliver racks developed to improve health and safety during loading and offloading Hynds Pipe Systems are proud to have partnered with the exceptional engineering and project teams at Watercare and the GAJV contractor on delivering on this vital upgrade of Auckland's wastewater infrastructure network. Watercare has raised CHF250 million (approximately $542 million) through the Swiss bond market to fund Auckland's water and wastewater infrastructure. The transaction, which settled on 27 March, comprises two tranches: CHF100 million with a three-year tenor and CHF150 million with a nine-year tenor. Since becoming financially independent from Auckland Council on 1 July 2025, Watercare has raised about $1.5 billion in bond funding across domestic and offshore markets, including a $400 million domestic bond and an A$500 million Australian bond. Chief financial officer Angela Neeson said accessing the Swiss market allows Watercare to extend debt maturity and diversify its investor base. Watercare holds an Aa3 credit rating from Moody's and has repaid over $1 billion to the council since July 2025.
