West River Health Services

West River Health Services

Non-profit rural hospital and clinics

Overview

West River Health Services is a nonprofit, integrated rural health system serving southwestern North Dakota. It runs a 25-bed critical access hospital in Hettinger, six clinics, an eye center, a surgery center, and Western Horizons Living Centers for skilled nursing and assisted living. The network provides acute inpatient and emergency care (ICU, labor and delivery, 24/7 ER), a multi-specialty medical group, rehabilitation, behavioral health, home nursing, and on-site visiting specialists. Revenue comes from patient services and earnings are reinvested to improve facilities and care; the WRHS Foundation raises funds for equipment and wellness programs, and the system collaborates with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine to train rural physicians and students. Its goal is to give rural residents easy access to high-quality care locally, reducing the need to travel and strengthening regional health through education and community partnerships.
