Overview

Yu Ming Charter School is a public, tuition-free K–8 charter school in Oakland that offers a Mandarin immersion program. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it is funded mainly through state and local public funding plus federal funds, grants, and donations. The curriculum uses a one-way dual-language model, with 85–90% Mandarin in K–2 and a gradual shift to more English in later grades, while maintaining high achievement in math and reading. The school blends academic excellence with whole-child education and social-emotional learning, supports diversity and equity, and aims to produce biliterate students and global citizens with broad access for families across California.
