Zeit AI (YC S24)

Autonomous data engineer for European mid-market

Overview

Zeit AI builds an autonomous data engineer for the European mid-market. Its product, ZeitMind, connects ERP, CRM and 600+ other source systems and uses an AI agent to deliver analytics-ready applications that remain traceable to individual transactions, running in German data centres so customer data stays in Europe. Customers describe their needs in natural language and the agent returns automation, analysis or applications without requiring dedicated internal IT capacity. Zeit AI differentiates itself by focusing on European data sovereignty (data stays in German data centres), deep integration with many source systems, and a no-IT-ops-needed experience for business users, backed by a pedigree from Palantir alumni and a European growth focus (Munich, with London expansion planned). The company aims to help European mid-market companies automate data engineering tasks, produce compliant analytics, and scale analytics apps across organizations while keeping data local to Europe.

Munich's Zeit AI banks €4.3M for autonomous data work.

Munich's Zeit AI banks €4.3M for autonomous data work. YC-backed Zeit AI banks €4.3M to give Europe's mid-market an autonomous data engineer. Last updated: September 3, 2026 11:33 pm Munich-based Zeit AI has closed a EUR4.3M funding round, roughly $5M, to build what it calls Europe's autonomous data engineer for mid-market companies. Y Combinator led participation alongside the University of Oxford's Seed Fund, the Sequoia Capital Scout Fund, ACE Ventures and Hasso Plattner VC. The round also drew angels including former German finance minister Christian Lindner, World Cup winner Mario Gotze, Meta board member Charlie Songhurst, Martin Schoeller and Helsing CTO Robert Fink. The startup argues Europe's industrial base cannot outsource the decisions that run it and that sovereign data infrastructure should be the default for its customers. Zeit AI's platform automates data engineering work such as pipeline building, schema management and analytics preparation, letting companies point it at their data and get production-ready models without a large in-house data team. The startup targets the mid-market gap between spreadsheet-driven companies and enterprises with full data organizations. The founders declined to name customers in the announcement, but the investor list carries weight: YC's involvement gives Zeit access to its US network while Oxford, Sequoia's scout fund and Hasso Plattner anchor it in European research and enterprise circles. The raise lands amid a European push for data sovereignty and AI infrastructure that companies control. If Zeit delivers on the autonomous data engineer pitch, it joins a growing cluster of German startups selling AI tooling to the industrial backbone rather than to hyperscalers.

Ex-Palantir founders' Zeit AI raises €5M, backed by a World Cup winner and a former German minister.

Ex-Palantir founders' Zeit AI raises €5M, backed by a World Cup winner and a former German minister. September 3, 2026 * Although the founder states that the company did not actually need the money, Zeit AI has raised €5 million in funding. * The company, based in Munich and led by two ex-Palantir employees, currently collaborates with around 30 enterprise clients. * The company also has as investors a former German finance minister and a World Cup winner. Zeit AI, a German startup building an AI data analyst, closed a €5 million seed round, backed by Y Combinator, the University of Oxford's Oxford Seed Fund, the Sequoia Capital Scout Fund, ACE Ventures, and HPVC, a fund linked to SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner. Angel investors include former German finance minister Christian Lindner, 2014 World Cup winner Mario Götze, Meta board member Charlie Songhurst, Helsing CTO Robert Fink, Martin Schoeller of Schoeller Group, and, according to Leopold von Waldthausen, Zeit AI's co-founder, Leopold von Schlenk-Barnsdorf, a researcher linked to the Schlenk SE family. In a conversation with Tech Funding News, von Waldthausen shares, "The company is quasi-profitable, and therefore we wouldn't normally have to carry out a fundraising campaign." He pointed out that the principal reason for the funding round was to formalise the relationships with strategic advisers. It is not something that a company which has only been in existence for two years usually does. Zeit AI\s co-founders, von Waldthausen and Marvin Bornstein, had previously worked at Palantir for four years. During that time, von Waldthausen was in charge of Palantir's customers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and Bornstein developed the initial versions of Palantir's AI Platform. "There was no one building Palantir for the mid-cap companies, and at the same time, even the larger companies had big problems working with Palantir if they were European, just because of some of the political reasons," von Waldthausen notes. A data analyst that works on its own,. Zeit AI's product, ZeitMind, is described as an autonomous data analyst that takes raw data, cleans and integrates it, and produces finished applications such as reports, alerts, inventory optimisation, and procurement improvements. It does all this without a human data engineer involved. One common concern is whether you can trust an AI agent to make financial decisions. Von Waldthausen explains the system's design rather than offering comforting words. "Every result within ZeitMind is auditable down to the steps the agent has run through," he says to TFN. Every number traces back to the exact SQL and database code that generated it - deterministic, not natural-language guesswork. Zeit AI operates from German data centres, which supports its focus on data sovereignty. However, its customers are not limited to the European mid-market. According to von Waldthausen, Zeit AI works with about 30 enterprise clients, including some in the US and two in Brazil, as well as European companies like Kolbenschmidt, Horsch, Allgaier Agrarhandel, Wahl & Co, Stern Stewart & Co, and Jetfly Aviation. The competitive landscape and what comes next. Palantir Foundry addresses similar challenges for enterprises that can afford its costs and meet its deployment timelines. Glean, a US enterprise AI search company valued at $7.2 billion after its Series F, focuses on surfacing existing knowledge rather than creating new applications from raw data. Neither company directly serves Zeit AI's target market: mid-sized industrial firms that are too small for Foundry and have needs too specific for Glean's approach. This represents a market gap, not a saturated field. The data analytics market is expected to grow from $107 billion in 2026 to $738.6 billion by 2033, and several European startups are positioning themselves as alternatives to Palantir. Jens Schmidt-Sceery, partner at HPVC, frames the round in explicitly political terms: "Europe's industrial base cannot outsource the decisions that run it. Zeit AI is one of the few companies making sovereign infrastructure the default rather than the compromise." The company's growth is clear from its staff numbers: it had six employees at the start of 2026 and now has 12, with plans to hire six more soon. Von Waldthausen says Zeit AI will open a London office next year. The new funding adds to about $500,000 in pre-seed capital raised through Y Combinator in 2024. The fact that Zeit AI has chosen to raise funds, even though it says the money isn't necessary, could be an effort to gain leverage or to support its assertion of having developed 'sovereign AI infrastructure' by involving well-known advisors. Regardless of which option it takes, the company now has the chance to discover which of its strategies is most effective.
